Larry David thanks President Obama for tax cuts…

Larry David

The creator of Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm Larry David wrote a thank you letter to the President in the NY Times OP-ED section for extending tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans.  While reading his thank you note please keep in mind that Larry David is a supporter of President Obama.

THERE is a God! It passed! The Bush tax cuts have been extended two years for the upper bracketeers, of which I am a proud member, thank you very much. I’m the last person in the world I’d want to be beside, but I am beside myself! This is a life changer, I tell you. A life changer!

To begin with, I was planning a trip to Cabo with my kids for Christmas vacation. We were going to fly coach, but now with the money I’m saving in taxes, I’m going to splurge and bump myself up to first class. First class! Somebody told me they serve warm nuts up there, and call you “mister.” I might not get off the plane!

I’m also going to call the hotel and get another room so I don’t have to sleep on a cot in the kids’ room. Don’t get me wrong — I love a good cot. The problem is they tend to take up a lot of room, and it’s getting a little tougher in my advancing years to fold it up and drag it to the closet. I mean, I’d do it if I had to, but guess what? I don’t! Not with this windfall coming my way. Now I get to have my own room with a king-sized bed. And who knows, maybe I’ll even get some fancy bottled water from the minibar. This is shaping up to be the best vacation I’ve had in years.

When I get home, thanks to the great compromise, the first thing I’m going to do is get a flat-screen TV. Finally I can throw out the 20-inch Zenith with the rabbit ears, the one I inherited from my parents when they died. The reception is terrible and I’m getting tired of going out to bars every time I want to watch a game. Last month, the antenna broke and I tried to improvise one with a metal hanger and wound up cutting myself. Every time I see that scab, I say to myself, “If, God willing, those Bush tax cuts are restored, I’m going to buy a new TV.” Well, guess what? They have been!

It’s also going to be a boon for my health. After years of coveting them, I’ll finally be able to afford blueberries. Did you know they have a lot of antioxidants, which prevent cancer? Cancer! This tax cut just might save my life. Who said Republicans don’t support health care? I’m going to have the blueberries with my cereal, and I’m not talking Special K. Those days are over. It’s nothing but real granola from now on. The kind you get in the plastic bins in health food stores. Did someone say “organic”?

The only problem is if, God forbid, the tax cuts are repealed in two years, how will I ever go back to Special K and bananas? Well, I did quit smoking, so I’m sure if push came to shove I could summon up the willpower to get off granola and blueberries. Of course, I suppose with the money I managed to save from the “Seinfeld” syndication, I probably could continue to eat granola with blueberries, but let’s hope it doesn’t come to that.

Life was good, and now it’s even better. Thank you, Republicans. And a special thank you to President Obama and the Democrats. I didn’t know you cared.

At least we know some people are happy with the tax cuts deal, LOL!!

Talking Points Tuesdays – GOP Stall Ratifying the START Treaty

The New START Treaty (for STrategic Arms Reduction Treaty) is being hotly debated (latest news it will be ratified today) in the Senate and once again I find myself asking

For those of you who don’t know what exactly START is, here you go…

Under terms of the treaty, the number of strategic nuclear missile launchers will be reduced by half. A new inspection and verification regime will be established, replacing the mechanism defined by the earlier treaty. Meanwhile, a number of operationally inactive stockpiled nuclear warheads will remain in the high thousands in both the Russian and United States inventories.

Removal from service of at least 30 missile silos, 34 bombers and 56 submarines launch tubes, though missiles removed would not be destroyed and bombers could be converted to conventional use. While 4 of 24 launchers on each of the 14 submarines would be removed, none would be retired.

The treaty will limit the number of deployed strategic nuclear warheads to 1,550, which is down nearly two-thirds from the original START treaty, as well as 30% lower than the deployed strategic warhead limit of the 2002 Moscow Treaty. The total number of warheads retained, however, could exceed the 1,500 limit by a few hundred because the treaty assumes that bombers only carry one warhead regardless of their actual carrying capacity. It will also limit the number of deployed and non-deployed inter-continental ballistic missile (ICBM) launchers, submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) launchers, and heavy bombers equipped for nuclear armaments to 800. Also, it will limit the number of deployed ICBMs, deployed SLBMs, and deployed heavy bombers equipped for nuclear armaments to 700. The treaty allows for satellite and remote monitoring, as well as 18 on-site inspections per year to verify limits.

On April 8th 2010 Presidents Barack Obama and Dmitry Medvedev (Russia) signed the new treaty; the next step for the United States is for the treaty to be ratified by congress and this is where all the problems started.  The House approved the treaty in a short amount of time but then the treaty has been held up by the Senate.  The agreement was submitted to the Senate on May 13th and has since then been reviewed and approved by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.  So after having the treaty in front of them for 8 months Republican Senators like Jim DeMint, John McCain and John Kyle NOW want to complain about not having enough time in the Lame Duck Session to ratify the treaty.  Kyle went as far to say that it was sacrilege for congress to be forced to work on Christmas Eve.

The simple fact is that Republicans are holding up the START Treaty so that President Obama a Democrat would get the credit for negotiating an arms treaty with the Russians.  At this point we are dangerously living in the world with less than adequate inspection of dangerous nuclear material, the START treaty addresses this.  The president was advised by several military experts that this treaty will not weaken the U.S. missile defense program… Republicans should just stop the BS!!!!

If the DeMint’s, McCain’s or Kyle’s of the world do not want to listen to military experts how about five former GOP secretaries of state—Henry Kissinger, George Shultz, James Baker, Lawrence Eagleburger, and Colin Powell… they all say the new START agreement does not block US missile defense.  They see no reason why the START Treaty should not be ratified.

Perhaps the GOP is holding up the treaty because they are still smarting over the Tax Deal or that the repeal of “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” was passed…  In any case stop the partisan politics!!

GOP Stalling on 9/11 1st Responders…

Firefighters, police, and paramedics on 9/11 never hesitated when the call came over the radio on that day.  While everyone else is running away from danger these men and women ran to it.  Then in the aftermath they came together to cleanup and search for possible survivors; all the while being told by the government the air was safe.

President Bush stood with first responders and promised that we will never forget and that would recover; so why nearly 10 years later when it comes to those first responders are Republicans playing partisan politics?  I can understand politicians playing games with Tax Deals, and other forms of legislations that may go against their ideology but that was supposed to all changed on 9/11.  There are no politics when it comes to 9/11, or at least there should not be…  Except Republicans have decided that politics are more important.

At first Republicans complained about the price tag of the bill; the original bill would have cost $7.2 billion and would have provided enhanced healthcare and monitored the health of those who worked at Ground Zero. Democrats then setup the legislation so that it would be paid; Democrats would pay for the bill by closing a tax loophole that gave foreign businesses a tax break for bringing foreign workers into the United States.

So what is the REAL motivation of the GOP?

Well, all you have to look at is the United States Chamber of Commerce who oppose closing the tax loophole; their argument is that this will hurt relations with foreign businesses.  So when did foreign companies become more important than Americans?  So where are those Republicans like Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann etc… who challenge President Obama’s loyalties?

The GOP is so desperate to raise money for their party that they are willing to sellout Americans rather than upset a HUGE money donor like the U.S  Chamber of Commerce!

Currently Senators Schumer and Gilibrand have been working on passing the bill; they have trimmed the cost of the bill down to $6.2 billion and are hoping they will have enough Republican votes to pass this.  The hope is that the Senate will pass this legislation today for it be signed by the President before the Lame Duck Session of Congress is over.

It’s crazy to believe that Republicans held extending unemployment benefits for millions of Americans along with tax breaks for the middle class hostage so that they could extend unpaid tax breaks for the richest Americans.  Is there any question who Republicans care about?
