President Obama Seeking Congressional Approval for Military Action

20130831-162235.jpg

When I wrote that President Obama had to speak to the American people about Syria; I never thought he would announce that he will be working with Congress. Obama announced today the he wants military action against Syria, but he will seek congressional approval for that action.

Ummm, ok….

Obama on several occasions has made it clear that any action against Syria would focus on their use of chemical weapons. He has also stated that it would not be an “open-ended” scenario as there will be no “boots on the ground”. And inaction would threaten the security of not only our allies (Turkey, Israel etc) but it would threaten U.S. security as well.

So why seek any approval?

I believe the president is being partly political in seeking approval. Many Republicans and Democrats have publicly stated a need for the president to present his case for military action against Syria along with thorough debate. The flip side is that many of those requesting debate are also reluctant to vote on authorization (I know shocker congress not willing to do something). With the president seeking approval he’s basically telling congress you can’t have your cake and eat it too.

Seeking approval from congress in my opinion is unnecessary and this is potentially setting a bad precedent for future presidents. Obama is also basically saying his decision for military action in Libya without authorization from Congress was wrong!

How is Libya different Syria?

And what if congress says no to military action in Syria? What will Obama’s next move be?

He’s on record saying he wants military action against Syria; will he ignore congress?

Republicans Want my Vote???

After President Barack Obama was re-elected, the RNC did a post-mortem on the corpse the current Republican Party. What they discovered was the world’s worst kept secret…

The current Republican Party is the ‘Old White Man Party’; if you don’t believe me checkout the voting demographics.

http://www.ropercenter.uconn.edu/elections/how_groups_voted/voted_12.html

So weeks after the 2012 elections many Republicans talked about expanding their base. Talking more about immigration reform and focusing on the middle class.

Well, that was at least a good thought.

In a move that really should not shock but it still has, Republicans seem to have boycotted the 50th Anniversary March On Washington celebration. At first many took notice of the absence of former Presidents George H W Bush and George W Bush; both reported declined the invitation due to health reasons (Dubya had surgery recently and Herbert is really old).

Yes the Bush’s absence was very noticeable but for me the was not the most shocking for me. The absence of elected Republican officials like Speaker of the House John Boenher and others like Rep Eric Cantor (House leadership) and Senator John McCain rang much more loudly. And this was not a case of an oversight, it has been reported Republicans were invited to the ceremony (Even Bill O’Reilly backed up that report) but just decided not to go.

SMH…

And Republicans want my vote???

President Obama Must Speak on Syria….

660536-syria-chemical-attack

President Obama must speak on Syria and the reason why the United States has to act against Syria’s use of chemical weapons; and he must speak directly to the people.  Today the president once again briefly commented on Syria and this is just not enough, it’s not enough when you are talking about taking military action that would impact the US not only in the international community but also domestically.

Polls show the American people want to know more before any action is taken, but in all honesty I don’t know if that is going to happen.  The plans are already set with 5 destroyers loaded with more than 200 cruise missiles ready to launch, and action can happen as soon as Saturday with the last of the UN Inspectors leaving Syria.

IMO, the president should wait for the UN Inspectors’ final report and then address the nation presenting what the inspectors discovered.  I fully support military action (limited with no boots on the ground) but no more sending out Secretary of State John Kerry, it’s time for the president to tell us what’s next!!!

Legally Married Same-Sex Couples Can file taxes as Married Couple

Treasury Department and IRS announced that legally married same-sex couples can file their taxes in the same fashion as heterosexual married couples. Even if the couple lives in a state that does not recognize same-sex marriage they can file as a married couple as long as they have been married in a state that does.

Yes same-sex married folks, you now have to deal with your partner knowing how much you REALLY make. No complaining now, you wanted married life and now you got it… HAHA!!

Just kidding, this is great for equality. My religious beliefs may disagree with same-sex marriage but those are my beliefs (which I disagree with) and not something I believe EVERYONE else has to follow or else they will burn in hell.

I wonder if Rush Limbaugh and the rest of the GOP will accuse the IRS of targeting same-sex married couples in order to verify they are filing correctly????

Ex-players Reach Settlement with NFL in Concussion Lawsuit

NFL

Ex-Players (more than 4,500) have reached a potential settlement with the NFL in their concussion lawsuit against the league; it is being reported that the settlement will include a payout of $765 million dollars (pending judge approval).

Ummmm, that’s it!!!

There has to be something in the details, right?

Well, it is also being reported that the NFL will NOT have to admit ANY liability or disclose internal files about what they knew about concussions and links to brain damage.

Hmmm, wasn’t this whole lawsuit about the ex-players trying to get the NFL to admit that they DID know something?  This is without a doubt a HUGE win by the NFL and the timing is perfect for the league with the new season about to start next week.

But hey, who cares? The clock is ticking until opening night and football being back!  Unfortunately the clock is also ticking on the overall health of one of the more critical pieces to the success of the NFL….

THE PLAYERS!!!

Pres Obama on Syria: “Must Be Held Accountable”

660536-syria-chemical-attack

Tonight (Wednesday August 28th) in an interview on ‘PBS News HourPresident Obama spoke about Syria (Assad Regime) and how they “Must Be Held Accountable” for using chemical weapons against the opposition and civilian population.  The president made it clear that it is not acceptable for any nation to use chemical weapons, it goes against “international norms”.

He also stated that no final decision has been made on what type of action will be taken against Syria, but he let it be known that he is not interested in any kind of “open-minded” conflict.

“I have no interest in any kind of open-ended conflict in Syria, but we do have to make sure that when countries break international norms on weapons, like chemical weapons that could threaten us, that they are held accountable”President Obama

As Pres Obama meets with his advisers you would have to believe (or hope) that they are not only discussing military targets in Syria but that they are also talking about what type of retaliation could result in launching missiles at Assad.

With the president setting a “red line” for Syria and Syria now crossing that line the United States has to send Assad a message with force behind it.
