No Tribute to Tony Gwynn at MLB All-Star Game

Last night’s MLB All-Star Game was a fitting tribute to Derek Jeter who will be retiring at the end of the season, but there was something missing….

Somehow Major League Baseball did not mention of the passing of Tony Gwynn who died after a battle with Cancer on  June 16th. I realize the retirement of Jeter is a big deal and he deserves all the praise for everything he has accomplished but no moment of silence before or during the game is unforgivable.

Gwynn was one of the greatest ambassadors for baseball and this is the way they repay him, it’s a shameful moment that baseball commentators should speak about and force some kind of response from Commissioner Bud Selig. I’m a lil shocked that Selig dropped the ball on this as he usually does a good job remembering the greats of the game.

And it was not only Tony Gwynn who was forgotten, but there was no mention of Ralph Kiner, Jim Fergosi, Frank Cashen, Don Zimmer, Jerry Coleman, and Bob Welch who passed away in 2014.

On Wednesday MLB and Fox Sports released a joint statement concerning the lack of tribute:

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, an extraordinary individual whose memory we have honored in numerous ways in recent weeks. The Baseball family has sadly lost a number of people this year – including Hall of Famer Ralph Kiner, Frank Cashen, and former All-Stars Jerry Coleman, Jim Fregosi and Don Zimmer – and did not want to slight anyone by singling out one individual.”

This is a sad excuse by MLB and Fox Sports.

The game stopped for five minutes for Derek Jeter and a standing ovation as he left the field for the last time as an all-star, you mean to tell me baseball and Fox Sports could not fit in another five minutes for some kind of video montage for those who have passed away?

Come on Bud, you can do better. I am expecting something nice during the Playoffs and World Series!

As always….

If there is something to be said, “It’s On Broadway” to step up and say it!!
