MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred Says Pete Rose Decision Expected by the End of Year

It has been 27-years since Pete Rose voluntary accepted the punishment laid down by then commissioner Angelo Bartlett “Bart” Giamatti (died 8-days after making his decision) to be placed on baseball’s ineligible list. A punishment which he never believed would have kept him out of MLB Baseball Hall of Fame.

The retirement of Bud Selig as MLB Commissioner opened a new doorway for Rose. In March Rose submitted his application for reinstatement to newly appointed commissioner Rob Manfred; and today Manfred announced on ESPN 980 with Thom Loverro and Kevin Sheehan that a decision on Roses’ application will be made before the end of the year.

While there is a ray of hope for Rose, he still has a huge obstacle to overcome. Rose admitted to betting on baseball as manager of the Cincinnati Reds as part of rehabilitating his reputation several years ago. In June ESPN reported about newly found documents that show Rose not only bet on baseball as manager but also as a player.

If this was Bud Selig making the decision I would say Rose has no shot at reinstatement, Selig was a close friend of Bart Giamatti and Selig never had any interest of undoing his friend’s decision. With Manfred, Rose has a chance, a chance that Manfred may want to move past this ugly stain on baseball history.

My personal opinion is that I love baseball and Rose broke basically the single most important rule in the game….

Rule 21 – Misconduct

BETTING ON BALL GAMES. Any player, umpire, or club official or
employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in
connection with which the bettor has no duty to perform shall be declared
ineligible for one year.

Any player, umpire, or club or league official or employee, who shall
bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which
the bettor has a duty to perform shall be declared permanently ineligible.

The Gary Carter Trade: 30 Years Later

The NY Mets were coming off a 90-72 season in 1984, and with a pitching staff led by the young phenom Dwight Gooden. The Mets were looking to add that missing piece that would take the to the next level.

December 1984 the Mets made a the trade that would change the franchise. They traded away Hubie Brooks, Herm Winningham, Mike Fitzgerald, and Floyd Youmans to the Montreal Expos for 7-time All-Star Gary Carter.

Although the Mets would barely miss the playoffs finishing 2nd to the St Louis Cardinals in 1985, it was a prelude of what was to be a special season in 1986.With the help of Carter and his no quit attitude the Mets would reach the top of the mountain in ’86 and win the World Series.

Here’s a preview of a short documentary taking a look back at that trade….

5 Tips for “New” NY Mets Fans…

As of today the New York Mets are in 1st place, 8-games above .500, with 54-games left in the season.

That’s right, you read that correctly!

The Mets and their loyal fan base (which includes me) have had an eventful 14-days since they made their first move before the trade deadline (July 31st at 4pm).

  • Wilmer Flores shed tears when he thought he was part of deal that would bring Carlos Gomez back to NYC
  • The Carlos Gomez deal falls thru and Flores earns the sympathy of Mets fans and many in baseball
  • The Mets trade for Yoenis Cespedes, the big bat they so desperately needed right before the trade deadline expired
  • Shaking off the tears from 2-days prior Flores hits a walk-off home run against the Washington Nationals to start a series sweep that would vault the Mets into 1st place

For loyal Mets fans who have not seen a winning season since 2008, we welcome the joys of a winning season and a pennant race. And we also welcome the band wagon fans, but here are a couple of tips for all you “New” Mets’ fans….

5. No one cares you haven’t watched the Mets since Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, Keith Hernandez and Mookie Wilson played

4. There is more to Citi Field than just Shake Shack

3. Don’t EVER, EVER, EVER bring up Luis Castillo

2. Don’t talk about the Mets still paying Bobby Bonilla, IT”S NOT THAT BIG OF A DEAL!!!!

1. It’s called Citi Field, not Shea Stadium. You simple fuck the Mets haven’t played at Shea since 2008!
