Congress and White House Fail to Extend Enhanced Unemployment Benefits

Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows met with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer today and left the meeting with no deal in sight. According to both sides, there is bipartisan agreement on many issues but still disagreements on key parts of extending the much needed Coronavirus Relief package.

“I think there’s a lot of areas of compromise. I think if we can reach an agreement on state and local and unemployment, we will reach an overall deal. And if we can’t, we can’t…” – Steve Mnuchin

After meeting with the Dems, Mnuchin and Meadows met with the press and announced they will recommend President Trump use executive orders to help address assistance for renters, student loans and unemployment insurance.

“We’re going to take executive orders, to try to alleviate some of the pain that people are experiencing,” – Mark Meadows

Now, what kind of executive orders can Trump enact? I have no idea, so it will be interesting to see what he comes up with.

The problem with ALL of this, is that it should have never reached this point where enhanced UI ($600) and now PPP have expired.

Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi passed the Heroes ACT ($3 Trillion dollars) back in May, and includes the following:

  • Stimulus Check – Individuals earning up to $75,000 would get a one-time $1,200 check. Couples earning up to $150,000 would be eligible for $2,400
  • Hazard Pay – $200 billion for hazard pay
    • Given to a wide variety of “essential” workers, including doctors, nurses and other frontline medical personnel, police officers, firefighters, social workers, grocery clerks, postal workers, and childcare and cafeteria workers
    • A $13-an-hour raise paid until workers receive a total of $10,000 if their regular pay is less than $200,000 per year. Or up to $5,000 total if they make more than $200,000 a year
    • Paid for 60 days after the pandemic ends if the $10,000 or $5,000 totals aren’t reached first
    • Distributed by employers, who will apply to the government for hazard pay, add it to their workers’ paychecks, deduct payroll taxes from all hazard payments
  • Unemployment Benefits – The HEROES Act would extend the benefits from the CARES Act, including the extra $600 weekly federal unemployment benefit, through January 31, 2021. If you’re already receiving Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC), your payments could be extended to March 31, 2021
  • Student Loan Forgiveness – The CARES Act suspended interest and payments for most people with federal student loans through September 30, 2020. Interest will not accrue during that period. The HEROES Act extends that break for another, year through September 30, 2021, and expands it to all federal student loans, including Federal Perkins Loans and some other loans
  • Rental Aid – provides approximately $100 billion for rental assistance. An existing nationwide grant rental assistance program would verify a tenant’s inability to pay rent and give vouchers to cover the cost of rent and utilities. It would also extend the ban on evictions for nonpayment for a year following its enactment date
  • Mortgage Relief – The bill also provides $75 billion for a homeowner assistance fund intended to prevent mortgage defaults and property foreclosures

Realistically speaking there is no way Republicans will agree with all of the above (Republicans want to reduce the UI from $600 to $200 (may go as high as $400)), but there is plenty of room for compromise. Unfortunately Senate Republicans and the White House waited until the Monday before the Employment Benefits expired to start negotiations. And now there is the pressure to get something done to help struggling families.

One compromise that could work was floated by a bipartisan group of economist who worked with the Obama and Bush Administrations. They proposed that Congress extend the enhanced unemployment insurance at $400 a week, and then tie the bonus payment to the unemployment rate in each state. As the unemployment rate falls, the bonus would decline.

As of right now, there are no new negotiations scheduled for this weekend. Hopefully both sides will come back Monday ready to make some kind of deal.

Senate Republican's Stimulus Bill Not Doing Enough for the Poor

When everyone can agree, with COVID-19 shutting down cities in the United States and countries in Europe. A stimulus to get the people thru these tough times is necessary, unfortunately Republican Senator Mitch McConnell sent a stimulus package that doesn’t really help the most needy.

The legislation would provide checks of $1,200 per adult for many families, as well as $500 for every child in those families. Families filing jointly would receive up to $2,400 for the adults. The size of the checks would diminish for those earning more than $75,000 and phase out completely for those earning more than $99,000. The poorest families, those with no federal income tax liability, would see smaller benefits, though the minimum would be set at $600.

Washington Post

Limiting the payment amount for those without federal tax liability was a change from the original White House proposal, and caught some Republicans off-guard, provoking criticism. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) tweeted: “Relief to families in this emergency shouldn’t be regressive. Lower income families shouldn’t be penalized.”

Washington Post

An early analysis showed the vast majority of middle class people would receive the cash payment, but the percentage doing so falls dramatically toward the bottom of the income distribution. About 22 million people earning under $40,000 a year would see no benefit under the GOP plan, according to an initial analysis by Ernie Tedeschi, a former Obama administration economist.

Washington Post

It’s not that McConnell’s payouts are less than what others like Senator Cory Booker and Maxine Waters have suggested ($2K). The issue is with the provision that would limit the amount for those without federal tax liability. A provision that even caught the White House by surprise. As noted in the Washington Post McConnell’s proposal would prevent approximately 22 million people earning under $40K a year. THe people who need the stimulus the most!!!!

Meanwhile McConnell’s proposal would take care of the wealthy. How many times do the people have to be slapped in the face in favor of big corporations receiving tax breaks?

Action is needed, but we need the right action to happen!

Derek Jeter Does Not Deserve a Unanimous Vote into the Baseball Hall of Fame

Full disclosure, I hate the Yankees!

This week Derek Jeter was voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame along with Larry Walker. Jeter fell 1 vote short of receiving a unanimous vote into the hall, and this had Yankee fans run to social media talking about how “we” need to find this writer who dared to vote against Jeter.

Larry Walker and Derek Jeter

And to be fair it wasn’t only Yankee fans, but it’s always more fun to point them out HAHAHA!

Now, if you are honest and you put your Yankee/NY bias aside for a moment. You will realize that Jeter receiving 99.7% of the vote is a great accomplishment, and all of this complaining about 1 vote is really stupid.

Let’s start with some facts:

  1. In his 20-year career, Derek Jeter was never the best player in baseball. Without a doubt a top 5 and top 10 player in baseball but never dominated the sport like say Mike Trout
  2. Derek Jeter was never a MVP, he finished top 3 in voting 3x

So when you look at the only player to be voted in to the Baseball Hall of Fame unanimously, Mariano Rivera stands out from Derek Jeter. Rivera without a doubt is the greatest reliever/closer of all-time; he’s the G.O.A.T (Greatest Of All Time). Mariano dominated baseball, and there was no question he was the best closer in the game. Derek Jeter never reached that level, and that’s ok, it doesn’t take away from what he accomplished.

Here’s something for Yankee fans to think about, Joe DiMaggio, ‘The Yankee Clipper’; was voted the sports greatest living player in 1969. Joltin’ Joe was not a 1st ballot Hall of Famer, in fact it took 3 years for him to be voted into the hall and he only received 88% of the vote.

The Prince Estate Reminds the Trump Campaign to Stop Using the Singer’s Music

In October of 2018, the estate of Prince sent a letter to the Trump campaign requesting that they no longer use any of the deceased singer’s songs at any Trump campaign events and activities. The Trump campaign responded that they acknowledged the request and will no longer use Prince’s music to avoid any “future disputes”.

This request was not unusual as other artist expressed similar displeasure in Trump’s campaign using their music.

Of course this didn’t stop Trump from using Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’ at his recent 2020 campaign event in Minneapolis.

Why ‘Purple Rain’? Well, it’s the campaigns hope that they can change the state from ‘Blue’ (Democrat) to ‘Red’ (Republican) for his re-election bid. It’s their hope that Minnesota is up for grabs which would make it a ‘Purple’ state.

This didn’t go over well with The Prince Estate, and they let it be known

Prince believed in owning his music, and fought hard to make that happen, just for situations like this. So far there has been no response from the Trump campaign, but they better not play with the estate. The last thing want is to have Prince’s ghost haunting them.

Shepard Smith Leaving Fox News

Over the years Shepard Smith has been known for his opposing views of Republicans and his colleagues at Fox News . More recently he has been critical of President Trump while others at the network fawned over the Commander-in-Chief.

Today the Fox News anchor announced Friday would be his last broadcast

“Even in our currently polarized nation, it’s my hope that the facts will win the day, that the truth will always matter, that journalism and journalist will thrive,” Smith said.
The Fox News anchor, hired to join the network at its inception in 1996, said his agreement with Fox meant he would not be reporting elsewhere in the near future.
“So recently I asked the company to allow me to leave Fox News, after requesting that I stay, they obliged,” “Under our agreement I won’t be reporting elsewhere, at least in the near future, but I will be able to see more of Geo and Lucia, and our friends and family, and then we will see what comes along.”
“This is my last newscast here. Thank you for watching today and over the decades as I traveled to many of your communities and anchored this program, studio B, and Fox Report, plus endless marathon hours of breaking news. It’s been an honor and my pleasure.”

Mediaite.com

While Smith was far from perfect, his departure from Fox News eliminates one of the few voices that challenged the Trump propaganda machine at the network.

Not that it matters to me much as I’m not a frequent viewer of Fox News. I am curious about one thing, did Shep get a farewell cake from Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity?

US AG William Barr Believes You’re Stupid…

When Robert Mueller completed his investigation into possible Russian interference during the 2016 elections, and/or coordination between the Russian government and the Trump campaign. Mueller submitted ‘The Mueller Report’ to United States Attorney General William Barr, for his review.

Barr took all of 48 hours to put together a 4-page document that stated Mueller’s investigation,

“does not conclude that the president committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him.'”

NBC News

48-hours to review a report that took about 2-years to complete didn’t make sense, especially when it’s being reported that Mueller’s report is over 300 pages long.

After a week of criticism Bar wants you to believe that his initial 4-page document was never meant to be a summation of Mueller’s Report. Barr is now saying that he wants Congress and the American people to have the opportunity to read the Mueller Report, but there is sensitive information that has to be redacted. The plan is to work with Mueller’s team to properly redact the report, and have it ready for release by mid-April.

“Our progress is such that I anticipate we will be in a position to release the report by mid-April, if not sooner,”

NBC News

“Although the president would have the right to assert privilege over certain parts of the report, he has stated publicly that he intends to defer to me and, accordingly, there are no plans to submit the report to the White House for a privilege review,”

NBC News

IF that was the case, why not say that from beginning, and rush a response 48-hours after the investigation was completed?

Well we know the answer to that question, it’s because Barr thinks we are stupid, and he’s partly right…

Conservatives, Trump Supporters, and Trump jumped on Barr’s summation and went ham on Twitter touting the presidents innocents and damning the ‘witch hunt’ (Mueller’s Investigation). Trump called out the media that pushed the Mueller Report / collusion story. Trump was taking his victory lap.

But the criticism grew and with public support growing for the release of the full report, Barr has to try to save some face. The release of the full Mueller Report may reach the anticipation level of Drake dropping a new album, lol. Well, at least in the political world.

Rex Chapman Compares Zion Williamson to Rodney Rogers… and it’s a Good Comparison!

Ever since Zion Williamson‘s 1st collegiate game with the Duke Blue Devils, people have been obsessed with making him the undisputed #1 NBA Draft pick in 2019. This has led to struggling Knicks’ fans to dream about Zion wearing a Knicks uniform playing next to Kristaps Porzingis

I am not one of those Knicks fans clamoring for Zion, don’t get me wrong he is an athletic freak that can jump out of the gym. He’s dominating college kids with his 6’7′ (or 6’6”), 285 lb frame, but I’m hesitant how his game will translate from college to the pros. And I discussed my apprehension on Twitter, which led to a nice back and forth with fellow Knicks fan @PauliePancakes5 and Brooklyn Nets lover @AdamOrecchio

As I went thru listing what I believe are Zion’s negatives, Adam replied with positives that made sense. And then Paulie said the following…

At that time I believe I replied with, good comparison but I think Rogers had a better jumper and post-up game then Zion. I didn’t think much of the comparison after that until today, when Bomani Jones (@bomani_jones) retweeted former NBA player Rex Chapman‘s (@rexrex_chapman) tweet

I definitely needed the video to remind me how much of a beast Rodney Rogers was in college, DAMN!!!! Zions outweighs Rogers by approximately 50 lbs but the height, athleticism and ferocious finishes at the rim compares favorably.

So shout out to Rex and I guess [sigh] props to Paulie for the Zion / Rogers comparison, but at the end of the day I still wouldn’t take Zion #1

Carmelo Anthony to Start Tonight for the Houston Rockets #STA7Melo #ItsOnBrodway

The Houston Rockets with Chris Paul (Missing time due to suspension) and James Harden are off to a 1-3 start, and so far newest Rocket Carmelo Anthony has not done much coming off the bench. Melo has talked about having to adjust to coming off the bench, but it seems like Mike D’Antoni is willing to give Melo a shot at starting to jump start the Rockets.

You know Melo has been wanting this, but it remains to be seen if the results will be any different. Even though the season just started, this Melo looks like the OKC Melo who just camped behind the 3-point line.

I know Melo can no longer carry a team, but he should be able to give a team like the Rockets effective minutes. Everyone talks about ‘Olympic Melo’ but what happened to “Bully Ball’ Melo in the post? Why not run a couple of plays for him in the post?

Ok, ok enough of all that, I am not here to be a Melo apologist. I just wanted to give a lil commentary about Melo making his first start for the Rockets tonight. To be honest i am not expecting much, but at the same time I hope nothing but the best for the guy

One last thing, you know Melo had to be sitting on the bench during this 1-3 start channeling the high school football legend Bobbie Miles (Friday Night Lights)

HAHAHA, I can see Melo now, “Y’all wanna win, put Melo in… I’m bout to spin!”

Matt Harvey’s Spot in the Mets Rotation in Question

Matt Harvey formerly known as The Dark Knight is going thru some dark days, as he continues to struggle to start the 2018 season. In his last start against the Atlanta Braves, Harvey was hit hard and often to start the game, giving up 6 runs in 6 innings.

After the game Mets manager Mickey Callaway was non-committal about Harvey making his next start against the St. Louis Cardinals.

‘We’re not really sure what’s going to happen with our rotation once Vargas gets back,’

‘We haven’t even thought about that. We haven’t thought that far. We’re not going to react on one outing. We’ll have to wait and see.’ – Mickey Callaway

Before this start many said Harvey’s spot in the rotation was dependent on this performance. With Zack Wheeler performing since coming back from the minors, and Jason Vargas putting up impressive innings in his rehab starts. The pressure is on Callaway to make a move.

It doesn’t look good for Harvey right now, but if there is anything good to take away from last night’s game, it might be Harvey’s response to questions about the possibility of him being demoted to the bullpen.

“I am a starting pitcher,

I’ve always been a starting pitcher. I think I showed in the fifth and sixth inning I can get people out still when my pitch count gets up, so I am a starting pitcher.”

When Harvey struggled last season, he looked lost and had no confidence. I know I am a Harvey fan (maybe the last) but this Harvey is different and he is correct that he was able to battle and gave the Mets 6 innings last night, and keep the Braves scoreless in his last 3 innings.

“I am a starting pitcher, that’s how my mindset is,” Harvey said. “That’s how I am going to prepare and how I get ready, that’s my reaction.”

“I think there is a lot still to prove,

I believe I took a step in the right direction. I am ready to get out of the hole and show what I can do.”

Call it a hunch but I believe Harvey will bounce back, I refuse to believe he’s done as a pitcher. There are too many ups and downs in a baseball season, and you can never have enough pitching. At this time the Mets seem to have too much pitching, but a couple of weeks from who knows what will happen.

Senate Republicans Unveil New Health Care Plan

Senate republicans introduced another health care plan to replace the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare), and if you are keeping count that is plan number 3, including the House plan.

So what have we learned from these republican plans to replace Obamacare?

Well, republicans seem to not give a damn about poor people being able to afford healthcare, and they don’t really care about keep campaign promises.

Throughout Trump’s campaign he said he would not make cuts to Medicaid

But President Trump celebrated the House health care plan; The American Health Care Act (AHCA) in the White House Rose Garden when the House passed its plan. A plan that included approximately $834 billion in cuts to Medicaid

What happened President Trump?

What happened to republicans promising to lower deductibles and premiums?

In the beginning of the year on Face the Nation, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell talked about the status quo being “unacceptable” with premiums and deductibles being too high. The problem is that healthcare plans from both the House and Senate fail to address what they have promised. And they lead to more Americans being without health insurance. Their plans offer cheap programs that will allow insurers to deny coverage due to pre-existing conditions while deductibles remain high.

How does these plans offered by Republicans Make America Great Again???

What’s so great about making it more difficult for the less fortunate to receive affordable health care?
