Talking Points Tuesday – What else can we Tax?

Let me start by saying that this is not a complaint about being taxed too much. I firmly believe that as American citizens we have to do our part. Here are 2 examples of “doing our part”:

1. if the U.S. goes to war and it is a war I support than I believe we should be taxed to support that effort.

2. I believe in affordable Health Care for all, and I am for paying taxes to support that. The simple fact is we pay a hidden tax on this away. So why not pay that upfront.

With that said Governor Paterson and Mayor Bloomberg of NYC are supporting a “Soda Tax”; this tax would apply a penny-per-ounce tax on sweetened soda to help raise money for schools and healthcare, which translates to consumers paying about an extra 12 cents per can. It is said that this “Soda Tax” could potentially raise $1 billion a year! Now this is the type of taxation that would more than likely be supported by the masses. Soda is not the healthiest thing on this earth, especially Coca-Cola! You could clean an engine block with that stuff, lol! Like cigarettes there should be a lot of support for this kind of taxation, anything that will help you break bad habits is generally a good thing, right????

Here’s the problem, the over taxation of cigarettes and soft drinks and doing this in the name of GOOD HEALTH is a bunch of BS! I look at this type of taxation as taking advantage of people’s addiction; do you really think the government wants you to give up soft drinks if they can potentially make $1 billion dollars off your addicition?

Like I said in the beginning I am all for supporting good causes, but stop the games! Yes a residual effect of over taxing cigarettes and soda could decrease the number of stink breathe smokers and overweight fat kids who have been drinking soda since they were capable of holding a baby bottle. Whose to say it stop with cigarettes and soda? What’s next?

I know, let’s increase taxes on Soul Food, all that greasy food will lead to heart disease and excessive licking of your fingers. Better yet lets just legalize weed (which is a great idea) so that it can be taxed! Aint no way weed heads stopping that habit because of some silly tax. They pay whatever just as long as it was legalized (I will save the legalization of marijuana for another day)!

Governor Paterson and Mayor Bloomberg keep it real. When you all see a payoff of $1 billion dollars the last thing on your mind is overall health!

Militant Mondays – Textbook Wars…

For years Conservatives have complained that schools of Higher Learning were dominated by Liberal professors who poisoned the young minds of Americans with thoughts of America being bad and how Capitalism was a terrible economic and social system. Maybe I missed something but college was not a breeding ground for Liberal development. College provided an opportunity of “Higher Thought” and helped developed various views of intellectual thinking. On 2nd thought; intellectual though…. That sounds like something a Democrat would embrace while Conservatives like Sarah Palin dislike. At the Tea Party Nation Convention Sarah Palin made that perfectly clear when she stated, “We (United States) needed a Commander-In-Chief NOT a Professor of Law…” I guess that makes all the sense in the world, because intellects think too much; hmmmm….

So now we have our current political environment where Republicans feel as if they must save the country from Liberals aka Socialist and their terrible thoughts and ideas. The Texas State Board of Education (SBOE) which consists of a 10 Republicans and 5 Democrats have proposed what they (Republicans) would deem as minor changes to the type of language used in textbooks purchased by the state of Texas. The changes proposed and approved on March 12th are as follows:

Additions by SBOE include:

– The conservative resurgence of the 1980s and 1990s, including Phyllis Schlafly, the Contract With America, the Heritage Foundation, the Moral Majority and the National Rifle Association.

– Replacing the word “capitalism” with the term “free-enterprise system” because of concerns that “capitalism” had become more of a negative connotation

– The study of American Exceptionalism

– The inclusion of the study or increased focus on leaders from the Confederacy, including a side by side comparison of Jefferson Davis’s inaugural speech with Abraham Lincoln’s speech

The following SBOE chose to remove, not include or not make mandatory several other provisions such as:

– Removing Thomas Jefferson from a list of writers who inspired the revolutions of the
late 18th and 19th Century and replacing him with St. Thomas of Aquinas, John Calvin, and William Blackstone

– Not mandating that students are taught that Hispanics fought in the Battle of the Alamo against Santa Anna

– Not including that the founding fathers protected religious freedom in America by barring the government from promoting or disfavoring any particular religion above all others

– Removing any reference to the United States as “democratic” and mandating that it be referred to as a “constitutional republic”

More than 100 amendments to the 120-page course curriculum for history, sociology and economics.

I know what many of you are thinking; So What? That’s Texas, they are ass backwards country folks that will be stuck in the good old boys days. Except this is bigger than the Texas State Board of Education, Texas is the 2nd largest buyer of textbooks in the United States. California being the largest, but with Cali in such a bad economic state they will not be the #1 buyer this year and possible for the next several years. Again you all are probably still saying, SO WHAT?

Here is why we ALL need to be concerned; I never realized that the language in textbooks (used by most schools) that we used to study in school are influenced by the largest purchaser. I always thought there was a standard that every state followed, should have known better. Like everything else in this world the almight dollar drives production. The textbook industry cannot afford to ignore a market like Texas. When California held the title of #1 buyer looks like intellect was more of a focus instead of agenda. For example I read some where that there was one proposal to replace any mention of hip-hop with country music. Why can’t we have both genre of music mentioned? Bye Jay-Z and HELLO Kenny Chesney!!

Well now Republicans have seized the moment. They figured if we can’t change colleges from being so Liberal lets influence the minds of the young starting in middle school. Why not have more minds like Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Karl Rove, Dick Cheney etc… What kills me is that these were the same Republicans that were opposed to President Obama addressing kids on the first day of school fearing that he was going to use that address to influence kids. How is this any different? It’s not, except their influence will last more than a 5-10 minute video address!!

Trust that these changes have the full support of the Republican Party; it was the Republicans led by Newt Gingrich in the 90s that led the “Republican Revolution”. When Former President Clinton was elected and Democrats won control of the Congress; Republicans decided to focus on elections at every level. They wanted a Republican in every official office possible and that included Board of Education positions, and shaping the future of our kids was exactly what they wanted. The new Young Republicans that will grow up to become Mayors, Governors, Senators and even Presidents.

I feel as if we are at a cross-road in life; this country is so polarized right now. You’re either Rich or Poor; the middle-class is a dying breed.

You look at the points the Texas SBOE want to add/remove from the textbooks and it’s a dangerous curriculum they are trying to push. Every so often Texas talks about succeeding from the Union aka the United States; it was just last year that Gov Rick Perry (Texas) talked about succeeding from the Union. So of course they would want to put MORE focus on the inauguration speech of Jefferson Davis (President of the Confederate States).

As if there isn’t enough partisanship in politics today, let’s just preach more separation instead of focusing on coming together as One Nation.

These kats even want to take away using the term Democratic when referring to the United States, WTF! According to Texas the United States should be referred to as a “Constitutional Republic”. I wonder why????

Could it be that the Texas SBOE (Republicans) doesn’t believe that this nation is built on the principle of political or social equality for all??? It has to be that, I mean Republicans don’t believe most Americans should be covered by Healthcare.

Republicans hiding behind the Texas SBOE continue to show that they do not believe in social equality. While we’re at it why don’t we just replace old Stars and Stripes with the Confederate Flag!

F-A-Natic Fridays – American Jihad

It is becoming more and more evident that the faces of terror are not what they used to be. After the failed attempt by the Christmas Day Bomber there was a lot of talk about “Profiling”. Is it time to start questioning people of Middle Eastern decent on GP? How much longer can we racially sensitive when the security of Americans is in question? These are some of the questions I hear from all levels; doesn’t matter if you ask the regular kat on the street or the book smart intellectual. It seemed as if the American people were reaching their breaking point. I honestly believe that after the Christmas Day Bomber failed that the American People were one incident away from saying F**K IT and start stopping every person that looks Middle Eastern and questioning any time they were boarding a plane.

That was my thought until this chick Colleen LaRose aka Jihad Jane hit the scene!

Jihad Jane was recruited to slaughter Swedish cartoonist Lars Vilks; back in 2007 Lars drew a cartoon of Muhammad’s head on a dog which sparked controversy throughout the Muslim world. JJ was not acting alone in this plot, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that more Americans are joining the Jihad since the United States went into Afghanistan and then invaded Iraq. Over the past year more than 30 Americans have been charged with terrorism.

Americans have to realize it is more than looking for some Muslim looking kats that don’t eat pork. We can’t act like all the extremists nutbags are in the Middle East, nutbags are every where.

Don’t be fooled, Jihad Jane is not an anomaly!

Takeover Thursdays – “Sallie Mae Six”

I want to take this opportunity to say that the United States Senate is FULL OF SHIT!!!!!

If I recall during the State of The Union Democrats applauded when President Obama announced reforms in education loans and how no one should go broke paying back school loans. I know these assholes cheered, so if you all cheered why can’t you idiots pass the damn Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act (SAFRA), without politics getting in the way?

Unlike Health Care Reform Republicans are not the ones standing in the way, it’s the Democrats! When I say Democrats I mean the morons in the Senate being led by Harry Reid. How is it the Dems in the House of Representatives can pass a SAFRA that is strong legislation worthy of the President’s signature, but the punk ass Dems in the Senate can’t even get out of their own way.

Before I get too far ahead of myself let me quickly explain SAFRA:

The Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act aka SAFRA expands current student loan programs; Pell Grant and Perkins Loan. Pell Grants do not require repayment and are awarded based on financial need. Perkins Loans are fixed interest rate loans of 5% for the duration of the ten-year repayment period. strengthening these programs will decrease the amount of money potential college students would have to borrow from private lenders. This would help graduates as they will not have to worry about their entire paychecks going to paying back student loans. This would also provide more incentive for kids to go to college. When I left for college I left a lot of intelligent friends behind who were not as fortunate as I was. For them going to college was nothing but a distant dream.

How could any Dem in the Senate not support this legislation? I mean Dems are supposed to be for the people, and help out those who are less fortunate. Well it’s easy, Dems in the Senate are too busy worrying about lining there pockets with money from the Private Lender lobbyist. So who are the punk ass Dems that are selling us out?

Senators Thomas R. Carper of Delaware, Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas, Ben Nelson of Nebraska, Bill Nelson of Florida, Mark Warner of Virginia and Jim Webb of Virginia.

I like to call these kats “The Sallie Mae Six”, I am sure they have no idea how difficult it is to send a kid to college. They are living comfy on $100K + salaries. They seem to care less about the middle/low-class families that put them in office and care MORE about private lenders like Sallie Mae (hence the name) with big lobbyists dollars.

I would love to TAKEOVER the Senate; Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid needs to give his team a kick in the ass. Reid can’t seem to push any legislation thru the Senate. Currently the House of Representatives (led by Nancy Pelosi) have 290 bills awaiting vote in the Senate. Right now Nancy Pelosi is a Ride or Die chick that President Obama can count on while Harry Reid is more like “Red” from “Friday”! If I was Senate Majority Leader, I would first try to quietly convince these kats to vote with the rest of the Dems on this legislation. If that didn’t work I would call a press conference and call them out; I would let everyone know about their new nickname the “Sallie Mae Six”. I know these kats wouldn’t be happy with me, but you know what F**K IT!! If you going to be about BS, then I am going to call you on your BS. I guarantee those 6 Democrats constituents would not be to happy with them supporting Sallie Mae. Seriously everyone knows Sallie Mae, when you graduate the last thing you want to see is a letter from that chick Sallie Mae.

Basically Senator Reid needs to grow a set and make it happen, Reid needs to be honest with himself. He will more than likely not be re-elected to the Senate; in that case go for broke and just be gangsta with it! Throw caution in the wind and make something happen, go out like a man. Do this for the people, let’s make higher learning a possibility for the less fortunate. This country is losing the race on innovation and there is no reason that should ever happen.

For this country to be great again we have to start with education, and here is a clear-cut way to make education more affordable. When will we put aside the politics and get back to making this country work again?

UPDATE 4/23/2010:
Democrats were able to pass this Student Loans Reform by bundling it with the Health Care Reform legislation. Unfortunately the bill passed is not as strong as the original version:

From the New York Times:

Although private banks will no longer be allowed to make student loans with federal money, many will continue to earn income by servicing those loans.

The Congressional Budget Office said the direct-lending approach would save taxpayers about $61 billion over 10 years. Roughly $40 billion of the savings will be redirected to higher education. Education programs will get an additional $10 billion from the health care package.

The bill includes some landmark changes, like automatic increases, tied to inflation, in the maximum Pell grant award. But for individual students, the increase in the maximum Pell grant — to $5,900 in 2019-20 from $5,550 for the 2010-11 school year — is minuscule, compared with the steep, inexorable rise in tuition for public and private colleges alike.

Even though it is not as strong at least the bill will help ease the crunch of repaying these loans back:

The legislation will make it easier to pay back student loans, by reducing the share of income that a graduate must devote to loan payments and by accelerating loan forgiveness — but not right away. Those who take out new loans after July 1, 2014, will have to devote 10 percent of their income to payments, down from the current 15 percent, and those who keep up their payments will have their loans forgiven after 20 years, reduced from the current 25.

WTF/WTH Wednesdays – Ben Roethlisberger

WTF is wrong with Big Ben??

How are you going to be caught up in 2 separate cases of possible sexual assault? C’mon son that’s just nutttzzzz!!!!

Seriously Big Ben whats the deal? You’re a young successful QB in the NFL, you have led your team to 2 Super Bowl titles. Are you that hard up for chicks?

To be fair this is an older pic of Big Ben intoxicated and enjoying the ladies, but at the same time with all the allegations surrounding Ben it’s looking more and more like this is not too far from the Ben Roethlisberger that is currently being investigate for an alledged sexual assault of a 20-year-old on March 5th; Big Ben is currently denying anything happened. This is the 2nd time in 8 months that Big Ben has been implicated in some kind of sexual assault scandal. The first alledged incident occurred on July 17th 2009 at a Lake Tahoe resort; to be honest that case is on very shaky ground as the girl never filed criminal charges. She only filed a civil suit which makes it look more like an attempt to get some money from Ben. As I am a firm believer in the U.S. court system, Ben is of course innocent until proven guilty.

So far Ben has denied both allegations, BUT the problem is that he didn’t learn anything from the incident at Lake Tahoe. I understand that athletes are targets due to their fame and money but you have to be smarter than that. You can’t get caught up twice in less than a year, that shit right there makes no sense. In all honesty that’s up their with some PacMan type of recklessness, not trying to take a dig at PacMan (he has stayed out of trouble as of late) but his record speaks for itself.

So with all this alledged trouble Ben is in and this being his 2nd incident within a year; what will the NFL do?

Now before I proceed I would like to say I don’t necessarily see anything wrong with Ben being at that bar. Some will say your only looking for trouble when you’re a star athlete and your going out to bars. WHATEVER, you can be a star athlete and still have a good time at a bar. Ben is not married and he is still young, hell I am an older than Big Ben and as some of you know; Broadway likes to get it in from time to time. I will acknowledge there is a big difference between Ben and myself; NFL star vs regular Joe.

With that out-of-the-way, I realize Ben is only being investigated for these crimes and no formal charges have been filed, but Ben has still put himself and the NFL image in a bad situation. I have to say that the NFL silence on this matter is deafening at this point! The NFL Commissioner adopted a NFL Personal Conduct Policy back in April 2007. This policy was put in place to clean up the image of the NFL after several off the field incidents involving its players. Goodell wanted to send a message to not only players but also fans and corporate sponsors; that the NFL would not tolerate behavior that will tarnish the image of the league.

Last time I checked being accused of sexual assault was not looked upon favorably. Maybe Tiger Woods affairs raised the bar for indecency, lol.

The NFL has to take action, if it was Brandon Marshall I believe there would be some kind of suspension. I am not expecting the league to take immediate action but something better happen. In my opinion the NFL is setting a bad precedent when it comes to certain players. There is nothing stopping Roger Goodell, well except that this time around the bad behavior is coming from one of the leagues “Good Guys”.

Fair is Fair Roger!!!!!!

Breaking News: Just read on Black Sports Online that Ben Roethlisberger just admitted to police Milledgeville Police Dept. that he did indeed had some kind of sexual contact with his accuser. He is still denying that he forced himself on the girl, THE PLOT THICKENS…..

Talking Points Tuesdays – How Many Kids????

Welcome to the NY Jets Antonio Cromartie; I may not be a Jets fans but I can tell you that Jets fans will love you if you play hard. With all that love comes some responsibility, and in the past you have not shown you’re not capable of handling the love. So to help you avoid past “mistakes” you made early on in your career. Here is a link you should checkout:

Not trying to come down on the young kat, who am I kidding yes I am! I just wanted to make sure Cromartie is aware how easy it can be to obtain condoms, because for some reason this seems to be a difficult idea for him to grasp. He has seven children by six different women in five states and at least five paternity suits in the past two years. This kat has been putting in a lot of work since he got into the NFL (2006), and it seems like most of that work was put in after his record-breaking 2007 season (team record 10 interceptions). For whatever reason Cromartie loves to go bareback with his women or at least he used to. According to his recent interviews he acknowledged he made some mistakes and that he is ready to take responsibility for those mistakes. Ayo homie, you may want to refrain from calling your kids mistakes!

Luckily for Cromartie the Jets saw enough in him to give him $500K up front to help him with his paternity suits; this is a damn shame for someone who is scheduled to make 1.7 million this year. Was it really worth it Cromartie? Now you have 7 mistakes in reportedly 5 states to support for a loooooooonnnnngggggg time. You know when you look at it a certain way the Jets made a pretty good investment, I mean Cromartie HAS to put in work so he can support all those kids!

In all seriousness this is not really about Cromartie but this is about the Larry Johnson’s (7 kids) (basketball) and Shawn Kemp’s (7 kids) of the world. WTH is going on these kats? Are they trying to get their “Big Love”? I don’t know but I doubt these guys will work as Mormons, lol:

It’s not cool bringing all of these kids into the world without real dads; you can’t possibly be with all these kids to give them the attention they need. No disrespect to single mothers out there but a child (boy or girl) needs a father to teach them the little things in life.

Money is not a substitute for daddy!

Let’s get it together folks; we cheer these heroes of the gridiron on Sundays. I say this coming season Jets’ fans need to really get behind and support the newest Jet; Antonio Cromartie.

Militant Mondays – David Paterson

Governor David Paterson of New York is the perfect example of someone who was never built for the public light of being governor. From the moment he stepped into the role taking over for a disgraced Eliot Spitzer he has dealt with some kind of controversy. The day he was sworn in all New Yorker had hoped Paterson could restore a level of dignity to the office. I mean he couldn’t have been any worse, right?

Former Governor Spitzer resigned due to his dealings with a high-class prostitute, but even before that Spitzer was involved with another scandal called trooper gate. It is alleged that Spitzer had NY State Trooper’s keeping tabs on NY Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno. At that point New Yorker’s believed it couldn’t get any worse.

From the moment this kat took the oath of office it seemed like a down hill ride!

The day after his inauguration both he and his wife admitted to cheating on each other…. Hmmmm, ok! I guess we can be cool with this, at least he is admitting to it and it shouldn’t have any bearing on how he can govern. Plus no one is perfect!

Well, in 2 years this guy has created so much controversy that he has lost all political power within NY State. He actually started out ok; he was able to close a $4.6 Billion dollar deficit while reigning in a bloated budget left behind by Spitzer. So I do have to give him credit for one thing. Unfortunately it didn’t get any better…

I believe all control was lost when 2 Democrats flipped and became Republicans as there was basically a coup attempt to change power in the NY State Senate. This went on for a couple of days as Paterson tried to restore order by bringing the sides together. Both sides came together but for the most part ignored Paterson; he would never recover from this.

As for the other scandals we all know the rest of the story; participation in a possible cover up of a close aide physically abusing a girlfriend and not paying for Yankees tickets. Personally I can’t forgive him for the Yankee tickets (disgruntled Mets fan), LOL.

Who would ever thought in a time when we can celebrate the first Black President and New York’s first Black governor that within a year things would be so bad that the White House (President Obama) asked him not to run for re-election. I mean how bad can it get when a brother can’t stick up for another brother? Whatever happened to Bros before hoes?? Just kidding, I actually applaud the White House for staying focus and understanding what is best for the party.
NY has become the laughing-stock of state-run governments; I mean I thought Detroit was bad with Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. It’s as of the blind is leading the… Ummmmm, I mean its like amateur hour in Albany; HA! This kat Paterson acts as if he can’t see the writing on the wall… Damn, my bad!! LOL

Even Gov. Paterson’s seeing eye dog quits:

All jokes aside, NY has suffered enough from poor mismanagement this is a great city that needs a no-nonsense Governor that will bring this great state back to its rightful position as one of the greatest states in the country. With that said I don’t believe Gov Paterson should resign, at this point it is too late in the game. Budget for 2010-2011 is due in April. What sense would it make to have him resign for someone else to get up to speed to get a good budget in? He was able to close a budget deficit back in 2008-2009 he can do it again. Even with all his screw ups he has displayed the ability to make the tough decisions.

So let’s leave the guy alone and let him finish out, as New Yorker’s I think we had enough of our dirty laundry being aired out for the rest of the country to see.

I say we as New Yorkers make a deal with Governor Paterson; we will let him stay in office as long as he can keep his blind ass out of NYC clubs. C’mon Son, fair is fair!!

Gov Paterson hanging out a NYC nightclub the day before delivering a sobering message concerning NY’s budget issues; NO BUENO:
