Stephen A. Smith’s flawed vote for Republican Theory

Full Disclosure, I am not a fan of Stephen A Smith so I don’t have many good things to say about this kat. This goes back to him appearing on Larry King’s show around 2009. And I have gotten into a couple of Twitter wars with Smith. At this point I believe he has blocked me, but all well. I hope this gets back to him some way, haha!!!

Stephen A Smith once again caused a stir this week when during a speech he suggested that all Black Americans should at least vote once for Republicans. Smith’s rationale was that the Democratic party has taken the Black vote for granted and that this would force both parties to realize they have to do a better job courting the Black vote.

So my initial reaction to Smith was……

image

I will say that Stephen A Smith has a valid point about the Democratic party taking the Black vote for granted, but he completely loses me with his suggestion of just voting for Republicans. While a situation where all Black Americans voted for Republicans would be a shock to the system of the Democratic party; why would that motivate the Republican party to court the Black vote?

At that point they (Republicans) get what they want in votes without having to do anything!

But hey, maybe there was something I was missing with Smith’s logic.

Ummmm, nah!!!!

On Michael Smerconish show on CNN, Smith went on to double-down on his logic without a good handle of the facts. Smith clearly states that he puts most of the blame on the Black Community, and barely mentions that the GOP has some work to do on their side.

As I stated earlier there is some validity to Smith saying the Dems take the Black vote for granted. We (Black people) should not blindly give our vote to any party, but at the same time BOTH parties, not only the Dems should give Black people and all voters a reason to vote for them.

If Stephen A Smith wants to convince me that I should not look at the GOP as the enemy then he has to explain to me why the GOP looks as me as the enemy.

When it comes to issues like Voting Rights, Tax cuts, Immigration, Income Inequality, and decreasing the number of uninsured Americans (want to repeal Obamacare with no replacement).

Smith talks about Democrats painting Republicans as bad guys but never speaks on what exactly Dems are wrong about. If Smith wants me and others to take him seriously he has to have a better grasp of the facts and stop demonizing (yes I said demonizing) Black Americans as being the uninformed.

Talking Points Tuesdays – Ground Zero Mosque

Ground Zero Mosque

The controversy surrounding the Ground Zero Mosque is clear example of how this country is going backwards; when did we as a nation stop progressing?  John Adams in a letter once wrote…

“There must be a positive Passion for the public good, the public Interest, Honour, Power, and Glory, established in the Minds of the People, or there can be no Republican Government, nor any real Liberty. And this public Passion must be Superior to all private Passions. Men must be ready, they must pride themselves, and be happy to sacrifice their private Pleasures, Passions, and Interests, nay their private Friendships and dearest connections, when they Stand in Competition with the Rights of society.”

These are powerful words from 1776 that  puts the Ground Zero Mosque mess into perspective, “public Passion must be Superior to all private Passions…”.  Meaning that we need to put our personal feeling aside for the greater good of society.  Some will argue that the greater good for society would be to respect the victims of 9/11 and their families; in no way are disrespecting the memories of loved ones lost.  Islam was not what took the lives of over 3,000 people on September 9th 2001; the act was committed by radical fundamentalist.

If there was evidence that the builders of the Muslim Cultural Center were affiliated with radical hate groups then I would fully oppose the building of the Mosque.  There is no room or protection of hate groups when it comes to the greater good or society.  If Newt Gingrich or Sarah Palin could show me that this Mosque would be a breeding ground of hate then I would fully support their stance on this issue; but all you hear from the and others like Harry Reid is nothing but political talk.  Both Democrats and Republicans are too worried about November elections and gaining support than the equal protection of religious freedom under the Constitution.

This issue has been politicized to the point that Republicans have already announced that they will make this an issue during the November elections; in response Democrats like Harry Reid who are in tight races have distanced themselves from what is right in order to save their jobs!  It’s good to see politicians like Charlie Crist, Mike Bloomberg and yes the President of the United States (Obama) take a stand for what is right.

Some times doing the RIGHT thing means supporting a unpopluar position, over the next couple of days we will see who has the BALLS to do what is right!  I hate to think that political pressure may stop this cultural center aka mosque from being built.  I hope not, I would have a hard time supporting any politician that would fold under the pressure.  That includes President Obama!!!

Takeover Thursdays – Who the HELL is Alvin Greene???

Photobucket

Alvin Greene could possibly be one of the greatest rags to riches stories of all-time!!

If you don’t know who Alvin Greene is don’t worry; no one knows who this kat is? That includes Democrats who voted for him the South Carolina Democratic Primary. Apparently Greene can run a better campaign that President Obama. While Obama had to raise millions of dollars to campaign; this dude Greene spent virtually NO MONEY in winning the primary in South Carolina. This kat ran a campaign with limited funds, no website, and no campaign posters/signs. Some how an out of work military veteran was able to pay a $10,440 filing fee required to run for office in South Carolina. Greene claims the money is from money he saved from his military pay; this would be believable except that he is currently using a public defender in his obscenity case. That’s right we could add possible jail time to his outstanding “Political Resume”; lol!

As I was saying, In South Carolina for you to be eligible for a public defender you have to prove you have no money, I doubt this dude has any secret Cayman Island/Swiss bank accounts where he is hiding his secret stash. I’m not trying to be a hater, but this just doesn’t add up.

At this point Alvin Greene’s story is more fiction than Eddie Murphy’s movie “Distinguished Gentlemen”; I don’t even think Hollywood could make up a story as sensational as this one.

Of course to add to the drama there are several conspiracy theories as to how this happened; some have said that since Greene and his opponent in the primary Vic Rawl are unknowns that voters simply selected the first name they saw (Which was Greene). Others have speculated that the large African-American population in South Carolina may have thought that Alvin Greene was the legendary singer Al Green running for office. WTH, I mean that last theory gives Black people NO CREDIT at all.

Other than the theory that voters simply picked the first name they saw on ballot; the only other theory that is plausible but just a bit of a stretch in my mind was the one offered by House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-SC). He believes Greene is a plant from the Republican party. The belief is that Republicans would want to have the weakest candidate possible to face incumbent Jim Demint. Clyburn case would be more believable if there was a strong Democrat in the running. In this case Vic Rawl is far from being a strong candidate! By the way, This is not the first time Clyburn has accused Republicans of foul play in South Carolina elections. To be fair to Greene, Clyburn has no real evidence.

In the next couple of days we will see if Greene will be the representative for the Democrats in November. Leaders within the Democratic party have asked for an investigation into Greene’s eligiblity as a candidate. It’s time for Alvin Greene to step and clearly answer simple questions about his campaign. For example, Where the hell did a broke military vet get $10,000 from?

Actually I am quietly rooting for the guy; if this kat can get 50% of the vote in a primary…

Takeover Thursdays – Come On Sen. McConnell!!

Here we go again with Republicans, different day same story. This time instead of Health Care Reform Republicans now seem to focus their party of “No” ways to Financial Reform. In late 2008 when our financial system was falling apart and barely hanging by a thread; the United States enacted a bailout plan to save our economy. This plan was not received well by many Americans as the government went in and saved “Fat Kat” corporate suits that took advantage of a poorly regulated industry and manipulated their ways to record earnings (Goldman Sachs). So with the public outraged about bailouts and the government taking ownership (large shares) of companies like GM, CitiGroup etc… You would think legislation to help prevent something like this from happening again would be widely supported by both Republicans and Democrats.

Well, not the case when it comes to Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY). He decided he was going to be against a Democrat backed Financial Reform legislation and attempt to label it an endless practice of bailing out “Big Banks”. Instead of encourage bi-partisanship McConnell decided he would continue the GOP’s “Obstructionist” ways. What McConnell miscalculated is that the public is not as divided on Financial Reform as they were on Health Care Reform. Not sure what McConnell was thinking, one thing has remained true; the public wants no part of bailing out Wall Street.

Photobucket

So exactly what is Senator McConnell trying to derail? Here are 6 key points of the Financial Reform legislation (via Washington Post):

1. A Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, housed inside the Federal Reserve, would write and enforce rules protecting borrowers from abuse by lenders.

WHAT IT MEANS: The location of the agency is a nod to Republicans and conservative Democrats who oppose the creation of a free-standing consumer agency, but everything else about this proposal is designed to please liberals, giving the consumer agency sweeping powers and imposing few checks on that authority.

2. A Financial Stability Oversight Council, chaired by the Treasury secretary, would coordinate federal efforts to identify and manage risks to the financial system and the broader economy.

What it means: Dodd wanted to give the council broad responsibility for policing systemic risks. After massive administration pressure, he agreed instead to give much of that power to the Fed. The oversight council will instead function essentially as the Fed’s board of directors on regulatory issues, signing off on its decisions.

3. A new process would allow for the liquidation of large, failing financial firms.

WHAT IT ME ANS: Companies could be liquidated by joint agreement of the Treasury Department, the Fed and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., which already administers bank failures and would play a similar role in the new process. Costs would be paid from a $50 billion pool of money gathered from large financial companies.

4. Credit-rating agencies would be regulated and liable for errors.

WHAT IT MEANS: Breaking with the administration and the House version of financial reform, Dodd’s bill would hold Moody’s, Standard & Poor’s and other rating agencies potentially liable for their judgments about the safety of bonds and other investments. The industry also would be regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

5. Banks would face new limits on trading and investment activities.

WHAT IT MEANS: The bill would restrict banks from running their own investment portfolios or hedge funds, an administration proposal known as the “Volcker Rule” that Dodd initially had rejected. The bill also would regulate the massive trade in derivatives, increasing the proportion of such trades that are publicly reported.

6. Some renovations would be made to the structure of federal banking regulation.

WHAT IT MEANS: Dodd abandoned his earlier proposal to create a single banking regulator after critics argued that the upside was not worth the effort. The bill still would eliminate the Office of Thrift Supervision. The Fed’s authority over smaller banks would be split between the FDIC and the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.

To most rational people all 6 points listed above can be agreed on as being necessary, BUT McConnell for whatever reason decided that point #3 was a clear-cut bailout for banks that the tax payer would be stuck with. Here is point #3 again:

A new process would allow for the liquidation of large, failing financial firms.

WHAT IT MEANS: Companies could be liquidated by joint agreement of the Treasury Department, the Fed and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., which already administers bank failures and would play a similar role in the new process. Costs would be paid from a $50 billion pool of money gathered from large financial companies.

So McConnell decided to paint the $50 billion dollar pool that banks would pay into as a bailout the banks would be able to use to stay afloat, WRONG!!!! The truth is that $50 billion dollars that the BANKS PAY INTO will be used to fund the SAFE unwinding of any banks in need. For example, if this legislation was in place in 2008 when Bank of America was in danger of going under; they would have been forced to use this fund to safely unwind their business.

What do I mean by safely? Bank of America (BOA) is a large enough bank with holdings/investments in several areas; just allowing the bank to fail would have negatively impacted businesses that rely on them and the overall economy. The $50 billion dollar fund would be used to help untangle Bank Of America’s investments and keep intact any business involved with BOA. Also in using this fund the Executive Management Team and The Board of Directors (the people responsible for the BOA’s failures) would be removed. This is in NO WAY A BAILOUT!!!!!!

To be fair to Senator McConnell deep down I don’t believe he really thinks this is a bailout. He is caught up in partisan politics, and it is a shame; fortunately for us (the people) not every Republican is following McConnell on this one. Senator Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) stood up to the ridiculous notion of calling Financial Reform a bailout. He stood on the floor of the Senate and clearly stated this is “Not A Bailout…”. As I have stated in previous blogs we have to move past this partisan mindset; that goes for Republicans and Democrats! Don’t fight legislation because you are trying to prevent the other side from doing anything productive. No good can come from that type of mentality, hopefully more Congressmen/women will take Senator Corker’s lead and do what is right.
Also keep in mind that we the people have responsibility in this as well, it is up to us to search for the truth. That means do the research before forming an opinion; just don’t take the one-sided stories of FOX News, CNN, or MSNBC. Listen to all view points and form your own opinions, the truth is out there!

Takeover Thursdays – Michele Bachmann

Photobucket

I felt the need to introduce this nutbag to you all; please remember the name Michele Bachmann. She is a Republican Representative from Minnesota and she is borderline nuts!!!! She is the perfect example of insanity on the Right that will hold this country back. Her ideas of what are “Big Government” ways of intrusion into our personal lives are so far Right she might be on an island by herself. We have to watch out for people like Bachmann, she is the type of person that would tell you that the government has planted microchips in us to track our every movement, LOL!

Seriously this broad is out there, where should I begin????

Let’s start with Bachmann’s views on Climate Change; she made the following statement about Carbon Dioxide, “Carbon dioxide is not a harmful gas, it is a harmless gas. Carbon dioxide is natural; it is not harmful…. We’re being told we have to reduce this natural substance to create an arbitrary reduction in something that is naturally occurring in the earth.” I will admit part of this statement is true but she seems to leave out the other sources of CO2; http://www.epa.gov/climatechange/emissions/co2.html

The lunacy doesn’t stop there, in June 2009 Bachmann talked about her concern about the upcoming Census in 2010. It seems as if her fears of big government hit an all-time high as she feared the Census was “very intricate, very personal”, and that, “the only question we will be answering is how many people are in our home, we won’t be answering any information beyond that, because the Constitution doesn’t require any information beyond that.”. That’s right folks watch out for the big bad Census, WTH!!! What respectable member of Congress acts this way???? She would rather people follow her nutbag ways than ensure her constituents were accounted for and received proper representation.

This is the insanity that is driving the extreme Right-Wing part of the Republican Party and the Tea Baggers of the Tea Party Movement. I know there are smart people in Minnesota, how is this nutbag still in office?

It’s time to Takeover Michele Bachmann’s seat in the House of Representatives; someone please dumped this psycho in Lake Minnetonka!

WTF/WTH Wednesdays – Wake Up GOP!!!

GOP it’s time to tell your party to STOP the frivolous lawsuits against the new Health Care legislation. The mandate of everyone purchasing Health Insurance is legal and covered by the Commerce Clause along with the Necessary and Proper Clause. These lawsuits are a waste of time and tax dollars; the various Republican state attorney generals and governors are pulling political stunts on the taxpayer’s dime.

While states are going broke you have Republican attorney generals and governors acting like a bunch of babies. In Georgia a Republican governor wants to impeach the Democrat attorney general for not pursuing a lawsuit against the Health Care legislation. Where has all the common sense gone? Republicans will continue to FAIL if they don’t start focusing on jobs and fiscal responsibility.

The GOP latest behavior is only part of the overall systemic problem facing this country.

That’s right; I want the Republicans to be good at something! Yes it is fun to laugh at the scandals of the RNCC and Michael Steele but the fact remains that Democrats cannot turn around this terrible economy by themselves. There are some very smart people on the Republican side of the aisle; the likes of Eric Cantor and Paul Ryan have bright futures ahead of them. If Republicans like Cantor and Ryan can get away from the ideology of being the party of “NO” America will be better suited to turn this mess around.

The GOP needs to stop being SORE LOSERS!!!

The nasty rhetoric by John McCain needs to stop. He recently stated, “There will be no cooperation for the rest of the year. They (Democrats) have poisoned the well in what they’ve done and how they’ve done it.”

C’mon Son! Your like 90 years old, stop acting like a kid who didn’t get his way and now taking his ball and going home.

The United States of America is not Liberal or Conservative. The majority of this country is Moderate; I am Liberal in many of my social views but I do believe in being a fiscal Conservative. Having those view points creates balance; it’s this balance which the country is sorely missing right now!!

Let’s REALLY be about…….

Talking Points Tuesdays – Barry got his Swagger..

After a year-long battle of pushing Health Care Reform (HCR) and taking all the bumps and bruises being dished out by the Republican Party. On January 19th it seemed as if all the Hope and Change promised by President Barack Obama was all but lost, on this day Scott Brown (a Republican) won the special election in Massachusetts. How could this happen? How could Democrats lose the seat once owned by Teddy Kennedy? With that loss the Democrats lost their Super Majority and seemingly lost the political weight they had. Republicans celebrated, Democrats pointed fingers at each other and pundits talked about HCR being dead and Democrats having to find their course once again. That night the country supposedly spoke and the country was telling the Democrats Fall Back!

I remember sitting there thinking this is the President’s moment and he needs to step-in and take control of the Democratic Party and right the course. The next day President Obama stepped up and set a new course for his administration, he made it known immediately he was not giving up on HCR. Obama went against many of his advisors and decided to take the Republicans head on concerning HCR. He attended the House Republicans retreat and successfully challenged their mis-information campaign. As Republicans continued to ride the coat-tails of Scott Brown’s victory, the President pushed forward hitting the streets talking straight to the people. Not from the White House but in the people’s backyards, holding rallies reminiscent of the campaign trail. Slowly but surely Obama started to regain that energy wave he rode into the White House; but that wasn’t enough. The President needed another stage to show he would not back down in the face of the Republicans; that stage would be the HCR Summit at Blair House. In a room full of Democrats and Republicans Obama was able to dictate the flow and impose his will.

At the HCR Summit Obama displayed the power of the presidency; in a very subtly way the President referred to each Senator and Representative (Democrat and Republican) by their first names; John (McCain), Mitch (McConnell), John (Boehner) etc…. Meanwhile each Senator and Representative referred to Obama as Mr. President. Again, this was very subtle but very critical in making sure everyone knew who was in charge. Obama walked away from the HCR Summit with another win while acknowledging there were very good ideas by Republicans and they would be incorporated in his HCR bill.

At this point the rest is history as HCR passed and is now law and the President is back on his grind!!!!

Photobucket

Since the HCR Summit the party of “NO” aka Republicans have seen some in their party vote in favor of bills supported by the President. It wasn’t that long ago when that would have never happened, for example some Republicans supported a Jobs Bill (including Scott Brown). When the HCR bill passed the House Republicans vowed to derail the Reconciliation process in the Senate, no matter how long it took. Well, Republicans only lasted a couple of days and folded as the HCR fixes were signed into law. Where is Boehner’s aka “Tan Man” tough talk???

Once the President won the battle of HCR he regained his SWAGGER; we have all seen the you-tube clip of then candidate Obama talking about brushing his shoulder off:

Well now it looks like President Obama’s iPod is bumping “Swagga Like Us”. Barack aka Barry got his Swagger back!!

You know I remember Tavis Smiley saying something very interesting during a book signing. He said, “You can’t govern like you campaign….”. Meaning, when on the campaign trail you’re trying to please everyone and win a popularity contest. When you govern there are times when you will not be popular and you have to be ok with that. It seems as if the President has learned that in the start of his 2nd year. We should see lessons learned from the HCR debate as the President looks to push Regulatory Reform through. The President will look for Republican support but if it is not there he will not wait, he has momentum on his side and he cannot give it up.

The President has put the Republican party on notice; either support the Regulatory Reform or be seen siding with Big Banks. Oh yeah, if Republicans want to run their November 2010 election campaigns on “Repealing HCR”, as the President stated, “GO FOR IT!!”

Guest Blogger: Let’s go Blue, not Rogue…

I like to introduce my first guest blogger, Jessica V. She reps Houston, Texas aka “H-town”, show her some love!!

Do you remember where you were, what you were doing, what exactly was happening the moment you realized you were a true blue blooded Democrat? For some it may have been the day you heard Senator John F. Kennedy announce his candidacy for president. For others, the realness and compassion of Jimmy Carter may have won you over, and for a younger generation Bill Clinton’s absolute refusal to back down in the face of criticism and his deep dedication to the American people may have been the push that brought you over the edge. Then, there are those of you who fall into none of these groups, your age, gender, race, religion, and social status vary greatly, but there is one thing you have in common. You became a Democrat the day Senator Barack Obama stood where Abraham Lincoln stood a hundred and fifty years before, and announced that he would seek the Democratic nomination for the 2008 presidential election. Whenever the moment was and whatever was happening around you, you felt something, something moved inside of you, and you would be forever changed.

Is that not the story of The Democratic Party? We are a party that is built around ensuring equality of all men, helping our brother when he is down, and making change where change is needed! People become Democrats under inspirational circumstances. Someone inspires them, moves them, makes them cry, and they then find their place in a party that has enough room for everyone but still feel likes a small, close-knit family at the end of the day. Is that not what you felt on November 4, 2008 as you watched Barack Obama accept the presidency of this great country? Is it not what you felt that cold day in January when he was sworn into office and spoke words that gave people around the world goose bumps and brought many to tears? Well, it is what I felt, I was so proud to be a member of a party that looks out for one another, and truly understands people, and more importantly truly cares about their well-being. The Democrat inside of me was reborn, and I was ready to get to work, and begin changing things!

AND, now here I am, one year and two months later, and I am at a total standstill. I don’t think I need to run down the list of what we have not accomplished; instead I want to take a stab at why so many things are still wrong. I am completely disgusted when I see my fellow Dems pointing fingers at the president and saying “he just hasn’t gotten enough done for progressives!” Let’s be real folks! Things haven’t gotten done because we as a party have not gotten them done!! It was a Democrat named Ben Nelson that was keeping us from getting the healthcare bill passed a few months ago, and more importantly it was Democrats like Max Baucus, Blanche Lincoln, and Kent Conrad who prevented the American people from having the public option this country so desperately needs. Therefore, who is really to blame? The president cannot be held solely responsible for what has or has not happened since he has taken office; his own party has played a great role in holding him back.

So what now? Do we just give up like they so desperately want us to? Do we turn and put our nose in the corner they have backed us into, and just call it quits? Are we as Democrats really going to let the GOP run us off? It’s time to get moving people! Our own party is leaving the man who caused us such inspiration just two years ago out in the middle of the ocean with no life-preserver. What are we doing?? The ridiculous bickering in the party and conflict over the smallest of things is giving the Republicans just what they want. They are sitting back laughing at us as we completely fall apart right under their microscope. We have fallen right into their game, and in case you haven’t noticed we are approaching the finish line rapidly, and the only thing at that line is a huge sign that says “YOU LOST”. It’s not too late, we can still turn this around, but it has to be done now. As a party we have got to stick together, even at times when we may not agree whole heartedly with our fellow Dems. This is not the time for compromise within our own party, this is the time for pushing through what we promised the American people in a united front. If this does not happen in the next couple of months, I am afraid Michael Moore is right. We will be headed for “the butt whipping of our lives” come November.

Takeover Thursdays – Anthony Weiner

If you don’t know Representative Anthony Weiner (D-NY), you better get to know this kat!

Rep. Weiner performed his own version of a ‘Takeover’ Wednesday morning in the House of Representatives. In about 7 minutes Rep Weiner summed up all of the frustrations of the White House, Democrats/Progressives in the House and Senate and the American people who support Health Care Reform (HCR).

Finally someone took it to the Republicans as Anthony Weiner started his rant by telling Republicans, “You guys have chutzpah (audacity)…”. Weiner’s Brooklyn side came out on this day, he took the floor of The House like a thug from BK taking a street corner.

In the wake of the Health Summit, Rep Weiner went on a rant pointing out the hypocrisy of Republicans and Democrats. Twice during his rant Weiner was stopped as he called Republicans, “wholly owned subsidiary of the insurance industry…”. Basically saying that Republicans are in the hip pockets of the insurance companies and will do whatever to protect those companies; aka BITCHES for Health Insurers.

When he made that statement Rep Lungren (R-CA) asked that Weiner’s “words be taken down…”. Lungren is saying here that Weiner’s comments are inappropriate and requesting that they be stricken from the record. In doing this Lungren is able to interrupt Weiner and have him restate his comments using different language. After a short delay Weiner is then permitted to continue.

In one of the more Gangsta moments you will ever see in The United States House of Representatives; Weiner refuses to change his comment and basically continues to call Republicans the BITCH of Health Insurers. Again Lungren interrupts Weiner request his “words to be taken down”. Once Weiner is allowed to continue you can still feel the fire and passion from him. He rips Republicans for standing in the way of real reform, change that is good for the people. As Weiner is wrapping up his diatribe he points out that the long-standing hypocrisy from Republicans is coming to an end, “Enough of the phoniness. We are gonna solve this problem because for years our Republican friends have been unable to and unwilling to. Deal with it!”

Here is the video of Rep. Weiner’s rant:

Democratic Senators & Representatives need to watch this video and take notes. For too long Democrats took the high road and tried to have intellectual debates about HCR, we saw this time and time again during the summer with all the town hall meetings. That message was not being heard by the masses; Rep Weiner message Wednesday was heard by all and is the perfect lead-in for the Health Summit taking place Thursday morning!

President Obama, if you were looking for someone in Congress that would fight for Health Care Reform. Look no further than that kat who reps Brooklyn and Queens. Rep Anthony Weiner, I salute you… You own “Takeover Thursday”
