Takeover Thursdays – Did President Obama back down again??

NO, President Obama did the smart thing.

Those pundits (mainly Liberal) claiming the president once again “Caved in” to the GOP are completely missing the bigger picture.  Since the debt ceiling debates all we heard from Liberal pundits on how the dragged out debate hurt the country and how the focus was taken away from what is important, JOBS!

And now we have another dust-up where Pres Obama wants to give a joint session speech to Congress laying out his jobs plan; the problem is the president needs for both the House and Senate to agree on the date when Obama wants to agree on the speech.  Well, Speaker of the House John Boehner decided that September 7th was not a good day for the speech.  Some say it’s Boehner trying to embarrass the president and that could very well be the case, but I say who cares.

So what??

What’s more important right now? Day in and day out we hear that this country is in a crisis and both Democrats and Republicans have called out Obama for not addressing the problem.  So when the president decides to accept the new date suggested by Boehner, why are the pundits complaining?

The president is doing exactly what they wanted; the jobs plan is much bigger than dragging out an unnecessary fight about when to give a speech.  I will admit, I first reacted to the Boehner suggestion in a negative manner but then I realized what’s more important… The American people, those Americans that are out of work and struggling to get by.  Like the debt ceiling debate no one wants to hear about who is the bigger fish in the pond (Obama or Boehner).

Lets not forget the point of even having a joint-session of Congress; it’s about the economy and its about jobs.  If the pundits want to critique something save it for after the president’s speech; lets complain about the lack of a plan or maybe even the lack of support for the plan.

I think everyone from pundits, congress and the president need to remember one thing…  In the words of Mr Jones (Craig’s daddy in the movie Friday)

J-O-B…

MSNBC’s Dylan Ratigan EPIC rant…..

As Americans continue to grow increasing upset with our current political process it is refreshing to see someone with a voice speak the uncensored truth.  Day in and day out we hear from the President, Democrats/Republicans/Tea Party folks in congress talk AT each other instead of TO each other.  As a political pundit Ratigan listens to the same thing EVERYDAY and instead of solutions we continue to see the systematic destruction of the United States.

We have a president that gives speeches of a vision while we have a congress scared/reluctant to do BIG things, what happened to the United States that went to the moon in the 60s and built the Hoover Dam in the 30s?  This current political environment is STUCK….

And when all phases of government are stuck, what is else is left???

As you will see in the clip below Dylan Ratigan is calling for the president to take it to the people and call what it is… Congress and our political process is BOUGHT!!!

“I am tired of Republicans and Democrats… Republicans who want to burn the place to the ground and Democrats with all due respect who wanna offer a plan that gets it through the end of their 2nd term of their presidency and screws me and my kids when it’s over…..”

Ratigan is correct on all levels and I will admit I get caught up in the idea of Dems vs Repubs, when both sides are to blame. Back in 2010 President Obama loved to use the line that Republicans drove the car (economy) into the ditch…..

WRONG Mr President, as Ratigan clearly states it was both the Democrats and Republicans who drove the economy into the ditch!!!

So what do WE do?

Well as Ratigan would explain the day after his rant, we have to take responsibility to understand/educate ourselves about what is going on with the Banks and American Tax Code and to turn around and explain it to those that don’t understand.  In this day in age with word of mouth and social media we can get the message out.

HELL, if we can start a f*(king Trending Topic on Twitter about Justin Bieber and keep it up there for months we can do the same about what is wrong with the United States and its financial system.

Of course this is all fine and dandy but as one of guest stated,

“Money and politics is the root of al political evil, it is corruption at it’s worse. And until we step up and kick that out of the park, it’s going to be the same system all the way.”

President Obama Addresses the Nation on Dangers of Default

Pres Obama addressed the nation Monday night but he really didn’t say anything new; well he did ask Americans to call their congressmen/women and let them know they support compromise and a balanced approach of reducing the deficit.

Obama once again stated his desire for a compromise between Democrats and Republicans; a compromise would include both sides giving in on long-standing beliefs.  Those beliefs being….

  1. Democrats – Cuts to entitlement programs; Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid
  2. Republicans – Raising taxes to increase revenues

The president believes you cannot truly reduce the deficit by simply reducing spending; he is of the opinion that reduction in spending will only hurt growth in the economy and set the country on the track for a double-dip recession.  Obama seem somewhat serious about a long-tern solution that will not only raise the debt ceiling through 2012 but it will also significantly reduce the deficit.

In his address to the people Obama described the stalemate and clearly pointed out that it was a select ‘Significant’ group on the Republican side that seemed to be holding up any deal that would raise the debt ceiling.  President Obama even went as far as invoking the words of former President Ronald Reagan (who raised the debt ceiling 18 times).

The next couple of days will be very interesting as Republicans seem hell-bent on the president failing and the Democrats will continue to fight any cuts to entitlements, many believe the Obama will fold and give into Republicans.  But is it really folding when so much is on the line?

As President Obama stated,

“The American people may have voted for divided government, but they didn’t vote for dysfunctional government…”

RAISE THE DEBT CEILING!!!

By the way it seems like the American were listening to the president when he said people should contact their congressional representatives; shortly after his address it was reported that the websites of congressional sites were down.

Speaker Boehner breaks off talks with Pres Obama on debt ceiling

Once again Republicans have basically walked out of discussions concerning reducing the deficit and raising the debt ceiling; this time instead of it being Eric Cantor this time it’s Speaker Boehner.  Pres Obama in latest talks offered Speaker Boehner $1 Trillion in cuts plus $650 Billion more in cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security; this latest offer was more “Generous” than what the Gang-Of-6 plan was offering.

With this latest walkout the president has asked Congressional Leaders to show up to the White House 11am tomorrow morning and that everyone should come with some kind of plan to avoid default.  Obama indicating that we have reached a point where the debt ceiling HAS to be raised now through 2012 and that talks would continue after debt ceiling is raised on reducing the deficit.

If Pres Obama manages to get a clean vote raising the debt ceiling (meaning no stipulations for the raise) he may have pulled off one of the greatest bluffs ever.  Many Republicans (Tea Party kats including Rand Paul) ran on the platform that they will not raise the debt ceiling without significant cuts to the deficit.  If the debt ceiling is raised with specific reductions agreed upon, Republicans will lose what leverage they had in this fight.  The GOP Congressional Leadership should have challenged the president and taken him up on his offer on the cuts and entitlement reforms.  1st Republicans turned down an initial grand bargain deal that would have had $4 Trillion cuts and possibly significant reforms to entitlement programs.  Instead Republicans declined the deal because it included eliminating many Corporate Tax Loopholes that would have raised revenue.

And now Republicans are rejecting an offer by the president that is more “Generous” than what the Gang-of-6 were proposing; WTF!  Most analyst agree that what the Gang-of-6 was offering was more than fair to the GOP an would have hurt the hardcore Liberal.

Instead Republicans want no parts of a balanced approach to reducing the deficit, they would prefer deficit reduction be done by hurting the middle class and poor.  Polls favor Pres Obama in this debate, #1 the American believe the debt ceiling should be raised and#2 they favor a balanced approach to reducing the deficit; meaning not only cutting spending but also raising revenue to reduce our national debt.

Republicans may have squandered a GREAT opportunity to not only reduce the deficit but also a chance to reform entitlements.  If the debt ceiling is raised with no stipulations, the momentum swings back in the favor of the president and the Democrats.  They can play hardball in defending Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

Hey Republicans, You Know You Done Fucked Up Now, You Know That, DONT YOU!!!!!

Talking Points Tuesdays – Anthony ‘Weinergate’ Weiner

As many of you know I am a big fan of Representative Anthony Weiner and his famous rants on the floor of the House of Representatives; but it seems the same ego that had him calling out House Republicans all throughout the Healthcare Debate has led to his fall from grace.  Only ego would let a married public official believe that he can send pics of his bare chest and underwear covered penis to women on Twitter.

It was also ego that convinced Weiner to lie about posting the pic of his penis and blame it on a hacked Twitter account.  Now Weiner will have to put that ego aside as he attempts to survive this controversy and hold onto to what is left of his political career.

As Politico pointed out this morning it’s not like Weiner had a standout legislation record; he was more known as a passionate mouth piece that stood out during the Healthcare Debates.  It was Weiner’s fire that helped keep the momentum going for reform.  Many will say that Weiner’s rants and brash ways was his way to build his inevitable run for Mayor of NYC; I have to admit that the idea of the fiery Weiner running NYC was very intriguing….

Unfortunately the likelihood of that happening now is more of a dream than a reality!!!

New Yorkers love a comeback story, we can understand people making mistakes…. But WTH!!!!!

If Weiner would have simply admitted that he was the one who sent the pic of his penis to 21-year-old Gennette Nicole Cordova he might still have an outside chance of still running for mayor of NYC 2013.  Again it would have been an outside shot; but with Weiner admitting to lying his chances at running for mayor in the near future are dead.

But all is not lost with Weiner, at this point he has not committed a crime (except against his marriage).  There will be an ethics investigation into behavior and the worst that will happen is that he will be given a slap on the wrist for being STUPID!

What’s important for Weiner at this point is that he has to do something that he may not be used to… Keep quiet and keep a low profile!  Weiner took the 1st steps yesterday finally admitting he is the penis pic tweeter (LOL); then he stood up in front of the press and answered just about every embarrassing question.  The point is to get all the questions out of the media’s system and then try to move on; the moving on part will not be easy especially with Republicans and even some Democrats who could look to exact some revenge on the hot-headed congressman who at times took no prisoners.  I am sure Rep. Peter King (R-NY) a known adversary of Weiner is taking a lot of joy watching Weiner squirm.

All in all Weiner will not be able to control what Republicans and Democrats will do with his future, but what he can do in keeping his head low is focusing on the little things.

If there is a pot hole that needs to be filled, Weiner should be out there with a shovel filling that pot hole!

If there is a park to be cleaned up, Weiner should be there with a broom and brand new swings set!

If there is a block party or parade that needs a permit, Weiner should be right there filling out the paper work!

In other words focus on the people who put you in office, work on possibly winning their trust back.  Maybe, JUST MAYBE… he will be able to regain the fire that made him a rising star as mouth piece for Democrats!

Here is a look back at classic Anthony Weiner

Bush, “Truly not concerned about Bin Laden…”

A couple of days ago I wrote about Condoleezza Rice nicely handling herself on Lawrence O’Donnell’s show and how it is vogue right now for Democrats to criticize the Bush Administration for not catching Osama Bin Laden.  I thought it was a bit over the top the way some Dems had looked at the capture and death of Bin Laden as purely an accomplishment for President Obama and failure for former President Bush.

BUT…..

I find it insulting that FOX News thinks they can just re-write history and act as if Bin Laden was always a major focus for them!!

GOP: STOP LYING!!!!!

On 3/13/2002 then Pres Bush minimized the influence of Bin Laden.  If you are going to applaud Pres Bush for building the foundation of intelligence gathering that ‘MAY’ have assisted the Obama Administration to find Bin Laden… THEN you also have to acknowledge that it was Pres Bush who  re-focused US interest from Afghanistan to Iraq.

In the next couple of days I will talk more about the silliness of FOX News coverage of the capture/killing of Osama Bin Laden!!

President Obama releases his 2012 Budget

With Pres Obama set to release his 2012 Budget on this Valentine’s Day I doubt he will receive much love from Republicans; especially in the House.  Obama’s 2012 Budget will propose $3.7 trillion in spending and $1.1 trillion in deficit reduction over the next 1o years.  Now with an overall National Deficit of $14 trillion, $1.1 trillion over the next 10 years doesn’t seem like much but it’s a start.  What’s lacking from the 2012 Budget are cuts to programs like Medicare, and Social Security.

Here are some other highlights from Obama’s 2012 Budget:

  • 2/3 of the money for the $1.1 trillion in deficit reductions over the next 10 years will come from program cuts and 1/3 of the money will come from tax hikes.  Well known programs to be cut are as follows; fewer subsidies for lower-income Americans for heating and cooling. And no more Pell grants for summer college.  Tax hikes will come from capping charitable deductions for wealthiest at 28% rate. Bush tax rates gone in 2013. Estate tax would rise back to 09 level
  • The 5-year spending freeze (at 2011 levels).
  • $78B in cuts over 5 years in the Pentagon budget

As I mentioned earlier this budget does nothing to tackle the entitlement spending like Medicare and the impending bankruptcy of Social Security; also what is missing is any mention of tax-reform.  The Obama Administration explained this by saying that cuts to Medicare, Social Security and Tax-reform are separate conversations.

Ummm, really???

We have to have these “conversations” soon, and right neither Republicans or Democrats seem willing to step forward and start that conversation.  The only one willing is Rand Paul, as I noted in a previous blog Paul’s ideas are definitely out of the box thinking for Washington but at least he is thinking.

We need to get serious and it needs to happen now!!

We will definitely see heated battles concerning Obama’s budget, but what good will that do if those battles don’t include cutting/reforming programs that carry the most weight in government spending (Defense, Healthcare, and Taxes).

With all that said, before we can move forward with the 2012 Budget we need to find out what is going to happen with the Debt Ceiling?  Some Republicans want to play a dangerous game by saying they will vote against raising the Debt Ceiling; if the ceiling is not raised the U.S. Government will default on its bills…
