Cory Booker For…..

Cory Booker

A couple of months ago I started hearing rumblings about the possibility of Mayor of Newark, NJ Cory Booker running for Governor of New Jersey in 2013.  Booker is a rising political star in the Democratic Party, a 2013 run against political heavy weight (no pun intended) current NJ Governor Chris Christie would be a daunting task.  Personally I think Booker would lose as Christie is very popular in NJ (a state which is Democrat).

but it looks like Mr Booker is keeping all of his options open as he climbs the political ladder, according to The Washington Post

Newark Mayor Cory Booker (D) is reportedly leaning toward a 2014 Senate run rather than a 2013 gubernatorial bid. Meanwhile, records show Booker’s fundraising adviser and former City Hall staffer purchased the web domains for  “BookerForSenate,” “BookerForGovernor,” and “CoryBookerForPresident.”

Hmmmm….

To be honest I don’t who are what seats are up, but I would like to see Booker as governor before becoming a senator.  The executive leadership (running a state) would strengthen Booker’s resume where he could compete with anyone.  At the end of the day whatever Cory Booker decides it will be an interesting race as he is a charismatic individual who connects with the people.

Pres Obama cutting his vacation short to monitor Hurricane Irene…

Politico is reporting that President Obama is cutting his Martha’s Vineyard vacation short to head back to the White House as Hurricane Irene approaches Washington DC.  The president will head back Friday while his family remains in Martha’s Vineyard as scheduled.

Overall this is a good move by the president, I am sure Obama could have easily monitored the hurricane from Martha’s Vineyard… But this move is showing leadership and at this point Obama needs all the good aesthetics he can get when it comes to him being President.  A good example of a leader taking the aesthetics of a situation for granted would be NJ Governor Chris Christie.

In late December the Northeast was slammed by a snow storm that left NY and NJ digging out for days.  During this snow storm Christie made the decision to stay on vacation in Disney World as he felt the situation in NJ was in good hands while he was being updated regularly throughout the day.  This proved to be a bad move for Christie as he was by many for not leading.

For the record I didn’t have an issue with Christie remaining on vacation as long as he was in contact with his people and kept up to date.  In all seriousness what did people want?  Did they want to see footage of Christie with a shovel digging cars out of snow drifts????

Same goes for Obama, do people expect the President of the United States to be filing sandbags and making make shifts dams to stop flooding??

At the same time I do understand this is politics and the public is all about appearances; with that said hopefully Hurricane Irene will not cause too much damage and everyone in the storm’s path will be safe.

So stock up on supplies (water, batteries, first aid kits) and stay dry, if you live in an evacuation area don’t be stupid….

LEAVE!!!!!!

WTF/WTH Wednesdays – States Running Out of Money…

A couple of months ago I was one of the critics of New Jersey’s Governor Chris Christie when he cancelled the largest infrastructure project in the United States; the new tunnel between New Jersey and New York which could have doubled commuter train service.  This project would have created 6,000 construction jobs and 45,000 jobs once it was completed.  When you look at it from that point of view of course it looks to be a RIDICULOUS decision, BUT when you look at the reality of the budget situations for states I don’t know how anyone can expect Christie to move forward with a huge expenditure like the Hudson River Tunnel.

As Christie stated on 60 Minutes the Day of Reckoning is here, how much longer can we continue to spend without first securing the fiscal stability of this country?  The answer is not much longer…

States are going broke and Joe Q Public doesn’t seem to realize this is going on; states are spending more than they take and raising taxes is NOT the answer.  Just look at New York, New Yorker’s pay a ton in taxes for years now and we still have a $10 Billion dollar deficit.  So what is the answer??

STATES HAVE TO STOP SPENDING!!!!!

We can’t expect Governors like Christie to OK projects they can’t pay for and create a larger deficit while already facing a $10 Billion deficit.  As the 60 Minutes piece highlighted a state like Illinois is a complete joke, it’s a DEADBEAT state.  They spend double the amount they take in from taxes; what sense does that make?

If we don’t start paying attention to this situation and STOP the demonization of Governors like Christie and Andrew Cuomo who are making the tough decisions; raising taxes on the rich and corporations will no longer cover as they only put a band-aide on what is really the issue.

Ask yourself this…  If you owned a business how long could you run that business spending more money than you actually took in?

In actuality it is simpler than that; if you live on your own and pay rent/mortgage and have bills like electricity/water.  How long could you stay above water if your expenses were greater than your income?  NOT VERY LONG!!!!

Unlike States, John Q Public does not have the federal government to bail them out… and with our National Deficit hovering around $14 Trillion soon States will not have the D.C. to bail them out.  If people thought the snow removal 2 weeks ago was bad; you haven’t seen anything yet.

CUTS CUTS CUTS to all types of City and State services….
