Mike Vick’s “Clean-Cut” Comment is Way Off-Base…

Mike Vick knows what it is to be a pariah, and his recent comments while on FS1’s ‘Speak For Yourself’ about Colin Kaepernick were well-intentioned…

“First thing we’ve got to get Colin to do is cut his hair,”

“Listen, I’m not up here to try to be politically correct. Even if he puts cornrows in there, I don’t think he should represent himself in that way in terms of just the hairstyle. Just go clean-cut. You know, why not? You’re already dealing with a lot of controversy surrounding this issue. The most important thing that he needs to do is just try to be presentable.”

“I just think perception and image is everything. This is not the Colin Kaepernick that we’ve known since he entered the National Football League,”

“I’m just going off my personal experiences. Listen, I love the guy to death. But I want him to also succeed on and off the field. This has to be a start for him.”

The problem is that Vick is using his experience as a false equivalent to what is going on with Kaepernick. Vick was a convict, Kaepernick has not broken any laws or served any time. Vick was trying to not only get back into football, he also needed money to pay off debts. The only thing Kaepernick is guilty of is exercising his right to protest and have an afro.

As Vick mentions he is going off his own “personal experiences” when he almost lost everything after serving time for his role in a dog fighting ring. When Vick was released from jail he had to rebuild his image and he ditched his signature cornrolls for a clean-cut look, and that’s fine, but you cannot compare the 2 situations.

Kudos to Eric Davis (former NFL player) for stepping up and challenging Vick in saying that he doesn’t believe Kaepernick cutting his hair will change anything.

Militant Mondays – Next step for Mike Vick…

Even though Mike Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles have been eliminated from the playoffs; Vick has nothing to be ashamed of.  After serving 21 months in prison and 3 months of home confinement, Vick was able to return to the NFL last season and quietly put forth the foundation that led to his success this season.  Thanks to Tony Dungy the Philadelphia Eagles and Donovan McNabb Vick was given a fair 2nd chance to turn his career around.

After completing a successful 2010-2011 season, there is a new challenge for Vick.

How will Mike Vick respond to his return to NFL stardom and a new big time contract?

During the season it easy to stay busy when you have the weekly grind of the NFL Schedule, but now it’s the offseason!

As time goes on he can’t expect to lean on the support system that got him to this point, he is now a starting QB and no longer who is going into next season with higher expectations.  During the season Vick for the most part said all the right things… spoke about the work it takes to be a great QB in the NFL and talked about his work off the field to repair his image.

Depending on Vick’s probation status his travel maybe restricted but he will still have a lot of free time and free time is always dangerous.  This is a critical time for Vick as he will show his true growth as a person.  Keeping his nose clean is not only important for his future contract status but it’s also important for his status as a free citizen!  He will need to avoid last off-season’s incident involving a shooting after an event celebrating his Birthday.  Vick was never charged with anything and the NFL did not take any disciplinary action against him; but it hopefully served as a reminder to Vick that he is only one incident away from losing it all again.

I am rooting for Mike Vick and his success… well as much as a NY Giants fan can root for an Eagle;  HAHA!!

Just kidding, in all seriousness let’s hope Mike Vick has a quiet off-season and keep is head on straight!!

Takeover Thursdays – For some Mike Vick’s comeback story not enough….

On Monday Night Football the comeback of Mike Vick reached a new high as Vick put up a record-breaking performance that may never be duplicated.

Vick became the first player in NFL history with 300 passing yards, 50 rushing yards, four passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns in a game. Vick also became the first player in NFL history to have three passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns in the first half of a game.

While most praised Vick’s performance there was at least one person who felt the need to make sure Mike Vick’s accomplishments were put into perspective he felt was necessary.  Steve Politi of NJ.com penned the article Michael Vick’s comeback will only be truly a great story if dog fighting declines.

Politi starts his article with Mike Vick’s tweet after his historic game, “God Can Turn Mistakes Into Miracles”.

He mentions Vick’s tweet as if to say that Mike Vick is out of touch with reality; Politi continues by calling Vick’s performance on Monday Night “impressive” but

“A miracle has to be bigger than broken tackles and touchdowns passes.  A decline in dog fighting?  Now that would be the miracle.”

Politi is either completely missing the point of what Vick is trying to say with his tweet or he is using the moment of Vick’s success to grab attention.  In this Politi is using Vick’s success…

I will admit that I am not an avid reader of Politi’s so it is possible that he has written a number of articles about dog fighting.  What rubs me the wrong way is how Politi wraps Vick’s historic night around this anti-dog fighting article.  To be honest this article acts like dog fighting begins and should end with Mike Vick and that is not fair.

We all know what Mike Vick did was wrong and him serving 21 months in federal prison along with 2 months of home confinement is no one else fault but his own.  What Politi fails to understand is that Vick being able to come back from losing it all too now being in the conversation for MVP is sort of miracle.  We always hear stories of athletes who waste their talent and lose it all; constantly being mentioned in “What if” scenarios.  How many times do we hear stories like this one turning into what seems to be a happy ending?

So when Mike Vick says, “God Can Turn Mistakes into Miracles” he is not saying it is miracle that he can put up record numbers by breaking tackles and scoring touchdowns.  He is saying that it’s a miracle that he was given the chance to play football again after all the mistakes he made in the past.

There is no need to diminish Vick’s accomplishments, as stated in the article Vick being found guilty of dog fighting and serving time for it shined a necessary spotlight on an issue that had to be addressed.  It’s unfair to saddle Vick with the responsibility of eliminating dog fighting as the title of Politi’s article suggest.

Sorry Mr. Politi, but if Mike Vick walks away from this experience an overall better person/player on and off the field his comeback is indeed a great story!!
