NY Mets Campaigning Hard for Jacob DeGrom for NL Cy Young

About a month ago I mentioned to a fellow Mets‘ fan that it would be nice to see the Mets push the narrative that Jacob deGrom should win the 2018 NL Cy Young regardless of his record.

Respect to the Mets (and because they are my squad do or die), they have capping real hard for deGrom over the past month or so. Constant discussion from the broadcast team, they pushed the agenda on their social media with the hashtag #48forCy

The Mets also put together a cool lil video…

I am often very critical of the Mets organization, but I have to give them their props for getting something right. Now if they can just operate like a team in one of the largest media markets…

Man up Wilmer Flores!

The 2017 season for the New York Mets has been a struggle due to injuries and inconsistencies with their pitching.

And after taking a beating in the first 3 games against the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Mets are about to officially be sellers at the trading deadline. With the season on the brink of being lost you would think players like Wilmer Flores would be focus on trying to show management that he should be in their future plans.

Instead Flores is worried about what Yasiel Puig is doing after Puig cracked a 3-run homer and admired his work.

Instead of being upset with his own play (currently slumping with something like 4 hits in his last 30 at-bats) and the play of his team. Flores decided he had to let Puig know he wasn’t happy as Puig made his way around the bases.

“I don’t think he knows what having respect for the game is,”

“We’re playing horrible right now. We don’t need his [behavior]. He disrespected us.” – Wilmer Flores

Seriously Flores?!?

If you don’t like the other team showing you up, how about you play better?

Flores needs to not be so sensitive, but hey what else should I expect from a guy who cried on the field in 2015 because he thought he was traded. Man up Wilmer, stop watching other players being an impact on the game and start being an impact for the Mets!

5 Tips for “New” NY Mets Fans…

As of today the New York Mets are in 1st place, 8-games above .500, with 54-games left in the season.

That’s right, you read that correctly!

The Mets and their loyal fan base (which includes me) have had an eventful 14-days since they made their first move before the trade deadline (July 31st at 4pm).

  • Wilmer Flores shed tears when he thought he was part of deal that would bring Carlos Gomez back to NYC
  • The Carlos Gomez deal falls thru and Flores earns the sympathy of Mets fans and many in baseball
  • The Mets trade for Yoenis Cespedes, the big bat they so desperately needed right before the trade deadline expired
  • Shaking off the tears from 2-days prior Flores hits a walk-off home run against the Washington Nationals to start a series sweep that would vault the Mets into 1st place

For loyal Mets fans who have not seen a winning season since 2008, we welcome the joys of a winning season and a pennant race. And we also welcome the band wagon fans, but here are a couple of tips for all you “New” Mets’ fans….

5. No one cares you haven’t watched the Mets since Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, Keith Hernandez and Mookie Wilson played

4. There is more to Citi Field than just Shake Shack

3. Don’t EVER, EVER, EVER bring up Luis Castillo

2. Don’t talk about the Mets still paying Bobby Bonilla, IT”S NOT THAT BIG OF A DEAL!!!!

1. It’s called Citi Field, not Shea Stadium. You simple fuck the Mets haven’t played at Shea since 2008!

Bobby Bonilla Continues to Collect Checks from the Mets

Well it’s that time of the year when everyone clowns the New York Mets for what’s commonly referred to as Bobby Bonilla Day.

Back in 1999 the Mets did whatever it took to rid themselves of Bonilla who was more of a distraction than a contributor for the team. At the time the Mets still owed Bonilla $5.9 million dollars, and instead of just releasing Bonilla the team wanted to free up the money a lot sooner. Both sides negotiated a buyout that deferred payments until 2011, and ending in 2035.

Under the terms, payments were deferred at an 8 percent annual interest rate. Instead of paying him $5.9 million to play out his deal, they will end up paying him $29.8 million for not playing for them.

Of course this seems like a stupid move by the Mets, but you have to dig deeper you will find the Mets are not the only team to EVER defer money on a players contract.

According to ESPN the following players/teams have agreed on deferred payments

Manny Ramirez
Ramirez won’t be paid by the Athletics during his 50-game suspension, but he shouldn’t have any trouble paying the bills. The Red Sox were desperate to unload Ramirez in the summer of 2008, but they are still on the hook for $32 million over 16 years. In fact, his first deferred payment was due July 1, 2011, to the tune of $1.968 million and change. The Sox will pay Ramirez through 2026, when he’ll be 54. (Source: Boston Globe)

Gary Sheffield
The Tigers owe the retired outfielder between $1 million and $2.5 million annually until 2019, stemming from a deal he signed in 2006. (Source: MLB Trade Rumors)

Bronson Arroyo
He’ll be getting paid by the Cincinnati Reds until 2021 thanks to deferred money from his three-year, $35 million deal signed with the team in 2010. (Source: Redlegnation)

Ichiro Suzuki
The Mariners will be paying their franchise icon until 2032 as part of a $90 million extension he signed in 2007. Once he retires, Ichiro will be paid in installments until at least 2032 or whenever the money runs out. (Source: ESPN)

Ken Griffey Jr.
When the Reds traded for Griffey and signed him to a nine-year, $116.5 million contract in February 2000, the star outfielder agreed to defer more than half the total value ($57.5 million) so the small-market club could stay competitive financially. The money will be paid out well into Griffey’s 50s, when Junior is no longer a junior. (Source: Reds Enquirer)

So I wish everyone would STFU about Bonilla, and no need to call it Bobby Bonilla Day. My Mets have done enough dumbass things as an organization, we don’t need this on our record as if only the Mets would do something like this.

By the way, because the Mets freed up the ‘Bonilla’ money they were able to use that money to help pay for Mike Hampton in 2000. Yup, that Mike Hampton that helped us get to the 2000 World Series.

And…..

When we lost Hampton in free agency, we were reward a pick in the draft that turned into David Wright!!!!!! (Courtesy Zach Braziller of NY Post)

@Mets vs. @Yankees the 2015 Edition #SubwaySeries

Full Disclosure, I am a HARDCORE Mets fan and I hate the Yanks aka the Skanks!

Once again it’s that time of the year in the baseball season; New York Mets vs New York Yankees!

Inter-league play started back in 1997 and for Mets fans, outside of the 2000 World Series and the 2006 playoff run, Mets’ fans have looked forward to the Subway Series.

And after all these years the Subway Series has lost its initial luster, but now we have the 2015 edition of the Subway Series!

For the first time the two teams will meet with both teams in 1st place, and both teams coming in on a high note.

The Mets are currently riding a 11-game winning streak and owning the best record in baseball (13-3). Their young squad with pitching studs Matt Harvey and Jacob deGrom, 2014 Gold-Glove center fielder Juan Lagares, rising star behind the plate Travis d’Arnaud (injured), and Lucas Duda are leading a revival in Queens. Of course we cannot forget about the ‘Captain’ David Wright who was looking like his old self before straining his hamstring.

Mets_SubwaySeries

The Yankees after a slow start, finished a strong road-trip going 7-3 and taking 2 out of 3 from the powerful Detroit Tigers. Working thru a transition from the golden age of the ‘Core 4’ (Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada, and Andy Pettitte), the Yanks veterans seem to be coming together with unlikely heroes in Alex Rodriguez and former Mets cast-off Chris Young. Jacob Ellsbury, Brett Gardner and Mark Teixeira round out this experienced team. If they can live up to their impressive resumes they will be a tough team offensively.

Yankees_SubwaySeries

This should be a great series, as a Mets fan I am beyond excited! Looking forward to seeing deGrom and Harvey cleanup the Bronx!!!!

HAHA, anyone that knows me knew I was going to at least take one shot at the Skanks!

Let’s Go Mets!!!!!!!!!

Matt Harvey: The Dark Knight Rises

New York Mets’ pitcher Matt Harvey has not pitched in a major league game since he partially tore of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow in August of 2013. That year he dazzled Mets fans with his blazing fastball, reminding them of past aces Dwight Gooden, Nolan Ryan, and Tom Seaver.

Needless to say it has been a long wait for Mets fans to see Harvey back on the mound.

ESPN’s E:60 documents Harvey’s rehab and talks to the young right-hander about surgery, rehab and pitching in NY. The special premiers April 4th, and I have to be honest, as a Mets fan, I got goosebumps watching the trailer….

@Mets Logo Change?

ICYMI and you probably did unless you are a die-hard New York Mets fan, Mets twitter fandom kind of blew up last night with when some fans noticed a slight change to the traditional logo on the Mets Facebook and Twitter account. This subtle change was well documented by @MetsPolice; Mets Logo Change

The Mets logo since their inception in 1962 has always been the following

Mets

The building circled on the right is the UN building, and for whatever reason the Mets PR dept recently changed to the following logo on their social media

Mets2

Now notice the UN building replaced by the ‘601 Lexington Tower’ formerly known as the Citigroup building. Rumors started swirling that this change was a result of the Mets selling out to Citigroup which is the namesake of their home Citi Field. That rumor quickly died as someone noted the building is no longer owned by Citigroup, but still the question remained why the change?

According to Adam Rubin (beat writer for the Mets), the Mets have formally stated there have been no changes to the logo

Rubin

Only the Mets could have something like this happen and have it turn into some kind of story. In all honesty when the story broke on twitter last night it did give me a reason not to pay attention to the Mets losing another game they should have won last night.

I will say, it is good to see there are still hardcore Mets fans, we are a special breed!

mets fans

Side note, Mets fans already know this but Jacob deGrom is a special talent. If you get a chance, watch a game when this kid pitches. Started last night’s game striking out the first 8 batters he faced; finished the game with 13-Ks. In 2015 the Mets should have a dynamic 1-2 punch with Matt Harvey and deGrom.

Doc Gooden Documentary Tonight on SNY

It’s hard to believe that it has been 30-years since Dwight “Doc” Gooden made his MLB debut for the New York Mets. Tonight SNY will debut its documentary about Doc Gooden’s rise and fall as a young 19-year old in the Big Apple.

Before Matt Harvey and Jacob deGrom, Doc Gooden was ‘Must Watch TV’!!!

‘The Good Doctor’ airs tonight on SNY at 9:30pm (Eastern)

Actors, Not NY Mets Players in NIKE Tribute Ad to Derek Jeter

1405362617000-Derek-Jeter

Nike/Jordan Brand will air a tribute ad tonight during the MLB All-Star game for Derek Jeter. In baseball a tip of the cap to the opposing team\player is a sign of respect.

From Red Sox fans, Jon Lester to Spike Lee and Michael Jordan the ad shows the level of respect Jeter has garnered over 20 seasons. And even in this moment of the New York Mets come off as clowns.

mets

For the record I don’t know what’s involved in getting the rights to show players images in a commercial like this, but I have to believe there could have been a better way to handle this. Derek Jeter is ‘The Captain’ of the Yankees and David Wright is ‘The Captain’ of the Mets; it would have been great to see Wright tip his cap to Jeter. Instead we have actors with blurred faces/numbers and a blurred faced Mr Met.

Maybe the Mets had nothing to do with the blurring, but as any Mets’ fan knows this has the Wilpons written all over this.

Curtis Granderson Doesn’t Understand Passionate Fans

When the New York Mets signed Curtis Granderson this past offseason he stated the following about New York Mets fans

“A lot of the people I’ve met in New York have always said that, ‘True New Yorkers are Mets fans,'” Granderson said. “So I’m excited to get a chance to see them all out there.”

Well Curtis, you got what you wished for!

Granderson and the Mets have heard their fair share of boos recently as they have struggled offensively in the early part of the 2014 season.  Granderson had a rough start as he quickly learned that Citi Field is not Yankee Stadium.  In recent weeks the boo birds have been louder and it’s starting to wear on the team.  In a recent interview with Newsday’s Jim Baumbach, Granderson made some interesting comments…

“I understand you’re a fan, but at the same time, you aren’t playing,” he said. “I can see you getting that intense as a player or have played. But if you’re just a fan and watching, enjoy the excitement of the game that is in front of you, win, lose or draw, whatever the case is.”

Wait….  What the hell is Granderson talking about?

This makes no sense, fans don’t have to play the game to have passion/intensity for their team.  Its passion/intensity that makes fans travel to see their team play on road games or stick around to support their team in extra innings.  There is nothing better than having your fan base support and that support is more than just excitement for the game.

Can you imagine the Raiders telling their fan base, “Hey guys, you’re not actually playing the game.  No need to paint your face and dress up in the and go crazy in the black hole.”

Word of advice for C Grand, stay away from insulting the fan base.  Trust me, if you produce the fans will stop booing.
