Talking Points Tuesdays – The State of the Union 2011

Tonight President Obama will deliver his 2nd State of the Union, in his first State of the Union he stressed the importance of Health Care Reform and attempted to dis-spell the inaccurate information concerning the legislation.  The night took a turn for the worse when Representative Joe Wilson (R-SC) yelled out,

“You Lie!!!”

While the President was explaining that his Health Care Reform would not cover illegals.

This time around I doubt we will have a “You Lie” moment but we will certainly hear some moans and groans as it is expected that President Obama will focus on investing in the future.  An investment in Education, Infrastructure, and Research and Development…. With our National Deficit hovering around $14 Trillion Republicans and Tea Partiers will not be happy with all the investment talk.  Representative Eric Cantor (R-VA) appeared on the Sunday talk shows preaching “Cut and Grow” instead of spending aka investing and growing.

To be honest I am not sure how you can “Cut and Grow”?????

We all understand that the deficit is out of control, but at the same time the United States is a Super Power that cannot afford to be stagnant while China and Japan are still growing.  In order to grow we will have to RESPONSIBLY spend/invest in our future; along with taking a hard look at cutting back in all areas.  I believe the President will show that he is open to looking at the Fiscal Commission findings and work with both Democrats and Republicans to reduce the deficit, although the President has already let it be known through his advisors that he is NOT willing to cut Social Security benefits.

With that said Republicans should not feel as if the President is turning a deaf ear to them or the American people as Social Security was not the only recommendation (Fiscal Commission Report).  The Fiscal Commission made up of Republicans and Democrats also stated that while we have to make cuts in spending that we cannot afford to go the route of draconian cuts; those type of cuts could stall the recovery of the economy.  Cuts have to be made but…

If we don’t we could go down the road of the U.K. as it was reported today; their economy contracted in the 4th quarter.  This was after enacting drastic cuts in spending, which in turn possibly caused a slow down in the economy.  The type of slow down we want to avoid in the U.S.

Tonight’s State of the Union will not only be the launch point for President Obama’s 2012 Campaign but it will also be a launch point for the future of the U.S. economy….

Let’s see how successful of a launch this will be!!

Talking Points Tuesdays – Repealing Health Care Reform Law

When the Democrats were “Shellacked” in the November Mid-term elections it was said that the downfall of the Dems and President Barack Obama was the focus on Health Care  Reform.  Political pundits on both sides along with Republicans leading up to election night and the day after said time and time again that the focus should have been on Job Creation and bringing down the National Debt.

So when Republicans started the 2011 session of the House of Representatives the first bill they decided to bring to the floor of the House was; drum roll please…….

Introducing Repealing the JobKilling Health Care Law Act”

With all the talk of listening to the people and how the House or Reps belong to the people Republicans have decided to turn a deaf ear to the people and follow their obsession; Barack Obama.  This is all about defeating Obama and whatever it takes to make it happen.  It doesn’t matter that the #1 concern of the people is the debt and the economy; polls show that Americans may not be thrilled with the Health Care Reform Act but there are number of things about the bill they like.

If the GOP continue down this road they will only be shooting themselves in the foot and are setting the stage for Obama’s 2nd term.  As the president’s favorable numbers improve (50%) the idea of Obama losing in 2012 will be nothing more than a silly pipe dream for the Republicans.  They better smarten up before it’s too late; the idea of it still being early is nothing but an illusion, just ask Democrats!

As Mike Barnicle  from MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” repeatedly said last year, “It’s the Economy stupid!”

We all know the Health Care Reform Act is far from perfect but it is a starting point, if Republicans don’t want to believe a Moderate Liberal like myself how about former Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn)

“It is not the bill that [Republicans] would have written,”

“It is not the bill that I would have drafted. But it is the law of the land and it is the platform, the fundamental platform, upon which all future efforts to make that system better, for that patient, for that family, will be based.”

“[The bill] has many strong elements,”

“And those elements, whatever happens, need to be preserved, need to be cuddled, need to be snuggled, need to be promoted and need to be implemented.

Yes, that is Republican Bill Frist who is saying work with the foundation of the legislation and improve it; not sure what to think about the “Cuddled” and “Snuggled” parts but everything else Republicans should listen to… HAHA!!

As always….

Talking Points Tuesdays – GOP Stall Ratifying the START Treaty

The New START Treaty (for STrategic Arms Reduction Treaty) is being hotly debated (latest news it will be ratified today) in the Senate and once again I find myself asking

For those of you who don’t know what exactly START is, here you go…

Under terms of the treaty, the number of strategic nuclear missile launchers will be reduced by half. A new inspection and verification regime will be established, replacing the mechanism defined by the earlier treaty. Meanwhile, a number of operationally inactive stockpiled nuclear warheads will remain in the high thousands in both the Russian and United States inventories.

Removal from service of at least 30 missile silos, 34 bombers and 56 submarines launch tubes, though missiles removed would not be destroyed and bombers could be converted to conventional use. While 4 of 24 launchers on each of the 14 submarines would be removed, none would be retired.

The treaty will limit the number of deployed strategic nuclear warheads to 1,550, which is down nearly two-thirds from the original START treaty, as well as 30% lower than the deployed strategic warhead limit of the 2002 Moscow Treaty. The total number of warheads retained, however, could exceed the 1,500 limit by a few hundred because the treaty assumes that bombers only carry one warhead regardless of their actual carrying capacity. It will also limit the number of deployed and non-deployed inter-continental ballistic missile (ICBM) launchers, submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) launchers, and heavy bombers equipped for nuclear armaments to 800. Also, it will limit the number of deployed ICBMs, deployed SLBMs, and deployed heavy bombers equipped for nuclear armaments to 700. The treaty allows for satellite and remote monitoring, as well as 18 on-site inspections per year to verify limits.

On April 8th 2010 Presidents Barack Obama and Dmitry Medvedev (Russia) signed the new treaty; the next step for the United States is for the treaty to be ratified by congress and this is where all the problems started.  The House approved the treaty in a short amount of time but then the treaty has been held up by the Senate.  The agreement was submitted to the Senate on May 13th and has since then been reviewed and approved by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.  So after having the treaty in front of them for 8 months Republican Senators like Jim DeMint, John McCain and John Kyle NOW want to complain about not having enough time in the Lame Duck Session to ratify the treaty.  Kyle went as far to say that it was sacrilege for congress to be forced to work on Christmas Eve.

The simple fact is that Republicans are holding up the START Treaty so that President Obama a Democrat would get the credit for negotiating an arms treaty with the Russians.  At this point we are dangerously living in the world with less than adequate inspection of dangerous nuclear material, the START treaty addresses this.  The president was advised by several military experts that this treaty will not weaken the U.S. missile defense program… Republicans should just stop the BS!!!!

If the DeMint’s, McCain’s or Kyle’s of the world do not want to listen to military experts how about five former GOP secretaries of state—Henry Kissinger, George Shultz, James Baker, Lawrence Eagleburger, and Colin Powell… they all say the new START agreement does not block US missile defense.  They see no reason why the START Treaty should not be ratified.

Perhaps the GOP is holding up the treaty because they are still smarting over the Tax Deal or that the repeal of “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” was passed…  In any case stop the partisan politics!!

F-A-Natic Fridays – Democrats still willing to fight….

With House Democrats voting to oppose Obama’s Tax Cuts Compromise this is the time for Democrats in Congress to show they have some backbone.  Just because Obama is president and he is a Democrat that doesn’t mean that Congressional Democrats have to follow his lead on every issue.  In this case it is a good time for Democrats to stand up; the people spoke loudly during the mid-term elections with their vote.  The change in Washington they hoped and wanted was for Obama not to be the typical politician.  This Tax Cuts Compromise has typical Washington Politics written all over it; so I was very pleased to hear about the House Democrats standing up and at least asking for more debate.

What was also encouraging was that Republicans like Michele ‘Nutbag’ Bachmann was even asking questions about this compromise; LOL, I know how crazy it sounds but I just kind of sorta gave Bachmann some credit.  Don’t get me wrong Bachmann is still and will always be a ‘Nutbag’ but I can’t disagree  her when it comes to spending in general (Just for the record I still disagree with her on what should be cut spending wise).  The next couple of days as we will see if more Democrats and Republicans will stand up and oppose this compromise.  It will all depend on public opinion, these kats will go where the poll number go on this issue.

I predict that more Democrats will side with the likes of Peter Welch, Anthony Weiner, and Bernie Sanders and force the president to revisit his compromise.  What will be the end result of more debate is still to be determined, I can only hope we see the Barack Obama in this video clip…

In the mean time let us hope that more Democrats will rally behind Bernie Sanders and do whatever it takes to stop this flawed compromise…

Talking Points Tuesdays – Newt Gingrich

Newt Gingrinch

Over the weekend Newt Gingrich (former Speaker of the House) made some outrageous comments about President Obama and the so-called origins of his political philosophy. Gingrich claims are so out there that noted Conservative Joe Scarborough could not help but laugh while discussing the topic on his show “Morning Joe”.  This is the type of nonsense that fuels nutbags like Pastor Terry Jones in Florida (Quran burning fool); and continues the ridiculous debate about the legitimacy of the president’s citizenship.  Currently this country is divided and it is not a divide that is only defined by political party; it’s much deeper than that.

 When Newt stated the following,

“What if [Obama] is so outside our comprehension, that only if you understand Kenyan, anti-colonial behavior, can you begin to piece together [his actions]?” Gingrich asked. “That is the most accurate, predictive model for his behavior.”

He played to the fears of naive Americans who still believe President Obama is not a citizen and a Muslim; Gingrich with his insane comments gave a voice to the rest of the nutbags aka Birthers!  Newt is a smart man who is stooping to below the belt tactics in an attempt to make himself relevent again.  This is not what the Republican party needs, they need creative minds who will focus on creating jobs and controlling spending.

The problem is until someone steps up we will continue to see fools like Newt Gingrich; how much longer will the American people continue to listen to this nonsense about the President being a Kenyan with anti-colonial behavior?  How much longer we will allow these idiot conspiracy theorist spit their delusional thoughts that Obama has been planning this Socialist takeover since he was a teenager?

It’s time to wake up people before it is too late!!!

Talking Points Tuesdays – Pride

Shirley Sherrod

Pride: a feeling of honour and self-respect; a sense of personal worth

Pride is something that is missing from many in our society and we this in many aspects of our lives. From politics to everyday life I am sure we all have examples of lack of pride. So it is a pleasant surprise when you can witness pride. For me an example of this would Shirley Sherrod.

For those of you who do not know who Mrs Sherrod is; she is the Black woman who was falsely accused and fired for using her position of power at the USDA to deny help to a White Farmer. Eventually the truth came out and Mrs Sherrod was exonerated which led to Head of USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack and the White House including President Obama personally apologizing to Sherrod.  Not only did Mrs. Sherrod receive apologies but she was also offered a brand new position or her old job at the USDA.  The new position was created because of this situation; in the new position it would be addressing questions of discrimination in the department (USDA).

Mrs. Sherrod took time to review the offer and the situation; at the end of the day she respectfully declined the offers.  She has not ruled out working as a consultant with the USDA in the future.  When asked why she decided not to accept the job offer she stated,

“A new process is in place, and I hope that it works; I don’t want to be the one to test it. … I think I can be helpful to him and to the department if I just take a little break and look to how I can be helpful in the future.”

I respect Mrs. Sherrod decision as it would have been easy for to take the new job, but she stood her ground.  A couple of years ago I was in a situation where a co-worker made some insensitive comments to me which were ignorant and disrespectful.  That co-worker tried to apologize to me and offered me a gift; like Mrs Sherrod I fully appreciated my co-workers apology and gift but I respectfully declined his gift.  I did not feel comfortable accepting his gift as I felt in accepting the gift I was condoning his actions.

Of course people have criticized Mrs Sherrod for trying to milk her “15 minutes of fame”; that is a ridiculous notion!  Without even knowing Sherrod this commentator decided that she should have just taken the job and gone away.  That would have been the easy thing to do but unlike some of the lame politicians who have no pride and sell them selves to the highest bidder; Mrs Sherrod decided her principles were more important.

If more people showed more heart and pride maybe we wouldn’t have the silliness we have seen in politics; it’s time for people to start standing up for what is right and not for what is polling well in the latest CNN poll!

WTF/WTH – Dr. Cornel West and President Obama

This is a delicate subject for me as I want to avoid giving the impression that there is some kind of feud between Dr. Cornel West and President Barack Obama. I am a big fan of Dr West as I have always enjoyed listening to him speak. Over the past couple of days I have listened and watched Dr West be questioned about the article in Playboy where Cornel West talks about some of his disappointments with President Obama so far. I have no issue with the West criticizing the president, I just want to make sure the criticism is legitimate.

In NO WAY is West being a hater of our 1st Black President with his criticisms. Too many times we have seen Black man/woman criticizes President Obama and then that person being criticized for attacking a fellow Black person in power. I have listened to Dr West on several occasions and he is an equal opportunity critic and believes in loving of all people. One of my favorite quotes from Dr. West is the epitome of his beliefs:

“Committed to truth and justice; no matter what color, what culture, what civilization. Just Truth and Justice!!!!

With that said Dr West has criticized the President for not pushing the agenda of taking care of the poor, creating jobs with a living wages, and focusing on what he calls the “New Jim Crow” which is the prison complex where the jail time doesn’t fit the crime. Dr West feels that there is too much focus on taking care of Wall Street and big business when we should be taking care of the poor. West feels if you take care of the poor then you will have your job growth; getting the poor and working class back to work will lower the unemployment rate and improve this economy. Along with the criticism Dr West during an interview on NPR discussed his last encounter with President Obama at a speech in Washington D.C. After the speech West said the President briefly talked to him (West) and sounded “deeply upset”.

“He talked to me like I was a Cub Scout, and he was a pack master, you know what I mean?

I said, well, my mother and father raised me right. I respect my dear brother, but I don’t like to be demeaned and humiliated in that way, and I didn’t get a chance to respond to him. And I hope maybe at some time we can. But it was very, it was a very ugly kind of moment, it seems to me, and that disturbs me because then it raises the question for me: Does he have a double standard for black critics as opposed to white critics?

Frank Rich, Paul Krugman, Maureen Dowd, a whole host of brilliant, courageous critics say all kinds of things, and he treats them with respect. They get invited to the White House. I say the same thing, he talks to me like I’m a Cub Scout.” – Cornel West talking about Pres Obama

With all due respect Dr West, I think your recent assessment of President Obama is off just a bit….

I can fully understand where Dr West is coming from when he talks about the importance of jobs and addressing the poor in our country. I also respect Dr West desire for President Obama to more like Dr Martin Luther King in caring for the underprivileged. Unfortunately that is easier said than done in the world of politics. I know my last statement sounds terrible and in no way am I diminishing the accomplishments of Dr King, I am just saying the 2 worlds are different. For example; everyone can agree that 9/11 1st responders should be taken care of as they sacrificed working in that toxic environment at the WTC. So what happened?? Instead of voting for the legislation Republicans chose politics over the right thing to do. This is what the President is facing as he pushes his agenda; the Republican party refuses to work with the President and Democrats in Congress. The “Party of No” (Republicans) have shown they will not support any initiatives supported by Democrats. While Republicans talk about Job creation and reducing deficit they vote against Jobs Bills and Extending Unemployment Benefits stating they will add to deficit. While in the same breath scream support for extending the Bush Tax Cuts that gives relief to only 2% of Americans and adds to our growing national debt.

Even with a Democrat majority Republicans have made it nearly impossible to pass any substantial legislation. To his credit the President was able to pass Healthcare Reform which will help a lot of poor/working class Americans and he also pushed through tax cuts for the Working/Middle class in an attempt to ease the burden on the backbone of our society. Those were major accomplishment that was done before Financial Reform, but I don’t hear Dr West talking about that. I don’t hear Dr. West talking about how Democrats in Congress have proposed legislation for Jobs Creation and how the President has pushed Congress for a bill for him to sign to help the working class and small businesses.

It takes 2 to tango and right now Republicans are not showing any desire to dance…

Jobs creation will happen, but like Healthcare Reform and Financial Reform it will take work as Republicans will have to come around on this legislation. Republicans can’t afford to say “No” as the people overwhelmingly want this. Instead of criticizing the President, Dr West should join him in pushing this through!

As for Dr. West feeling the President “demeaned and humiliated” him, that is unfortunate and the President will have to work that out with West. In my opinion it doesn’t matter if it’s true or not but it matters that Dr. West felt demeaned. Over the last year or so I have heard about Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow being invited to the White House to discuss various topics; there is no reason why Dr. Cornel West has not been invited to discuss those same topics. His experience is invaluable and should be shared.

As Dr. West said on MSNBC’s “The Ed Show” the President cannot take for granted the support of Progressives like himself.

I don’t believe the President is taking Progressives for granted but it’s all about perception; and right now President Obama is learning that Progressives and Liberal Democrats are NEVER happy!!

F-A-Natic Fridays – Birthers

In a recent NY Times/CBS Poll only 58% said President Obama was born in the United States, while 20% said he was born in another country and 23% said they did not know.

WTF, I can’t believe people are still falling for this nonsense being pushed by a bunch of unstable fools known as Birthers. Rachel Maddow defined a Birther as the following:

A specific new breed of American conspiracy theorists who believe that the real problem with Barack Obama being president is that he can’t possibly have been born in the United States. He’s not eligible to be president. The birth certificate is a fake. He’s a foreigner. Once this has been exposed, I guess, he will be run out of the White House and exposed for the alien, communist, Muslim, gay, drug dealer, al-Qaeda member that he is …

Seriously, if you had half a brain you would not even buy into the birther foolishness! Well, not if you’re Tom Tancredo (former Representative from Colorado) and Sarah Palin who still believes that the people have the right to be suspicious about the President’s citizenship. Even after Obama released his birth certificate online for the world to see ( and an independent organization even analyzed the birth certificate and reported the state seal was legit and verified that all Hawaiian birth records have been moved from paper to online and that a special request was necessary to see the actual birth certificate (Hawaii has denied several request).

So how can 58% of people polled still believe that Barack Obama is not a citizen?

The only answer I could come up with is RACISM! There is no other reason; this is not about a difference in political beliefs (Democrat vs. Republican) or any overwhelming evidence to cast a shadow of doubt. It’s about a group of people who can’t accept a Black man as President. They can’t accept the most powerful nation in the free world is run by a Black man; and it’s a shame!!

It’s a shameful way of thinking and I tried to avoid it, but it becomes clearer every day as sensible politicians (Cecil Ash) continue to allow racist idiots to talk this nonsense without correcting them. I hate to pull the race card as it is used way too often in our society but in this case I cannot find any other reason to explain the nonsense we hear from Birthers and some (not all) Tea Party supporters. Birthers went as far as to produce a fake birth certificate from Kenya to prove Obama was a foreigner, what’s next for these birthers? How far will they go in trying to evidence that doesn’t exist?

On 4/21 Anderson Cooper confronted birther Arizona State Representative Cecil Ash about his support for legislation that “Would require U.S. presidential candidates who want to appear on the ballot in Arizona to submit documents proving they meet the constitutional requirements to be president.” . As you will see in the video below Anderson Cooper will point out that no one every questioned President Bush or President Clinton’s citizenship. Why do we need legislation for proof of a candidate’s citizenship?

Just because we FAIRLY elected a Black man as President we as a country have still have long way to go when it comes to race!

WTF/WTH Wednesdays – Disarmament

In a bold move President Obama put forth a new strategy for the United Stated when it applies to our usage of Nuclear weapons as a deterrent. I call this a bold move as the President will open himself to criticism from Conservatives; in fact it has already started as Sean Hannity called President Obama the worst president ever after announcing the new strategy. Of course that type of reaction from Conservatives is to be expected, or is it??? I will answer that question in another blog, but for now I will focus on President Obama’s decision.

When President Obama signs the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START Treaty II) the United States strategy for usage of nuclear weapons will change. The U.S. will not use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear nations in the event of a biological, chemical attack or cyber-attack. As long as you are in compliance with the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty we will only retaliate with conventional warheads. North Korea and Iran do not comply with Non-Proliferation Treaty so if they want to try us they risk being wiped off the face of this Earth

The START Treaty II also includes the reduction of nuclear weapons; it will limit operationally deployed nuclear warheads from approximately 2,200 to 1,550, down nearly two-thirds from START I.

Many Republicans (Rudy Giuliani) in the next couple of days will use the START Treaty II to call the President weak and say he is putting the country at risk. This is a risky move by the President but it shows the confidence President Obama has gained since the HCR bill became law. The President understands that we (U.S.) cannot act as if we can continue to increase our nuclear weaponry footprint and ask other nations not to start a nuclear weapons program.

With that said I still don’t know if I would be able to sign the START Treaty II; with Iran spitting in the face of the world when it comes to nuclear power (weapons) I HOPE this does not comeback to haunt President Obama!

When you really think about it, who should we be more concerned with?

Iran or North Korea who may or may not use a nuclear weapon in the future against the U.S. Should we be more concerned about the Sarah Palin’s and Michele Bachmann’s of the world that would use nuclear weapons against a nation that would hack your computer, LOL!

Seriously, nuclear weapons should never be used as offensive tools. I hope we never have someone like Palin or Bachmann with their finger on the button!!!
