Talking Points Tuesdays – Rep Todd Akin needs to take a seat!!

For the record i am a Pro-Choice Catholic and I respect Todd Akin’s Pro-Life stance.

But this latest BS….

SMH, As much as I like politics there is no real reason why I should even know who Rep Todd Akin (R-MO)!

Unfortuantely for him not only do I now know who he is but so do many other folks who don’t really follow politics.  Akin went national when a local interview went viral, in that interview Akin introduced  many folks to the term “Legitimate Rape”…

“If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something, I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be of the rapist, and not attacking the child.” – Todd Akin

Wait… WHAT????

This reckless statement took a life of its own where even hardcore Republicans had to distance themselves from Akin and his comment.  While there were some Conservatives like Dana Loesch who tried to defend Akin for the most part common sense Republicans see there is no defending Akin’s mentality.  Republicans like S.E. Cupp stood up to say the following:

“I don’t fault Akin for his disdain for abortion. But disdain alone cannot be the foundation of policy. And we shouldn’t empower people who prove so unarguably to be so unserious and incurious that they will say just about anything to back up their disdain.” – S.E. Cupp

I can appreciate how S.E. Cupp took the responsible approach and didn’t try to simple defend a fellow Republican.  Too many times since 2008  I have seen Republicans (and Democrats) blindly support their party while throwing common sense out the window.  In my opinion this type of behavior is dangerous and is the real threat to the United States.

Todd Akin’s way of thinking is out there, and he needs to take a seat.  There is no way he should be given the power to cast votes in the United States Senate, no one that believes the female body can shut its reproductive system down in case of rape should be allowed to be a deciding vote on ANY issue in Congress.

It’s time to move on Akin, do what’s right for the Republican party and step down!

To be honest as a Liberal I should be rooting for Akin to stay in the race, there is more of a chance that someone else could step in and actually beat Claire McCaskill (D-MO).

Takeover Thursdays – Repeal, Repeal, Repeal, BUT…. No Replace!

Rep Al Green (D-TX)

Since the day the Affordable Care Act aka Obamacare aka ACA was signed into law (March 23, 2010) Republicans have talked about repealing the law….

REPEAL AND REPLACE!!!!

The only problem is there is no plan to replace, well Republicans will tell you they have a “plan”. But there plan is more of incremental changes that will not insure nearly as many Americans and will not put much of a dent in the rising cost of healthcare.

So how is it Republicans have been talking about repeal and replace since 2010 and now that it is 2012, there is NO real plan to replace?

What kind of leadership is Speaker Boehner providing for the GOP if he can’t come up with some kind of plan to replace Obamacare.  The GOP had 2 YEARS to come up with something, instead they are empty-handed.  And once again Republicans in the House of Representatives decided they must have another vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act…. For the 33rd time, and for the 33rd time there was no plan to replace.

Here is a funny but truthful speech by Representative Al Green from Texas:

Kudos to Al for speaking the truth and showing the foolishness of the GOP, by the way here is great descriptive pic that the Democratic Party Facebook page posted:

Facts about the Affordable Care Act aka Obamacare…

Thursday June 28th will go down as a pivotal moment in President Obama‘s presidency, whether this will be a good or bad moment is yet to be determined as now President Obama will turn his complete focus to winning his re-election bid.  In that re-election bid President Obama will have another chance to sell the Affordable Care Act as Mitt Romney and the Republican congress will campaign against it.

Ezra Klein laid out 11 key facts about the Affordable Care Act in his WonkBlog:

  • By 2022, the Congressional Budget Office estimates (pdf) the Affordable Care Act will have extended coverage to 33 million Americans who would otherwise be uninsured.
  • Families making less than 133 percent of the poverty line — that’s about $29,000 for a family of four — will be covered through Medicaid. Between 133 percent and 400 percent of the poverty line —  $88,000 for a family of four – families will get tax credits on a sliding scale to help pay for private insurance.
  • For families making less than 400 percent of the poverty line, premiums are capped. So, between 150% and 200% of the poverty line, for instance, families won’t have to pay more than 6.3 percent of their income in premiums. Between 300 percent and 400 percent, they won’t have to pay more than 9.5 percent. This calculator from the Kaiser Family Foundation will let you see the subsidies and the caps for different families at different income levels.
  •  When the individual mandate is fully phased-in, those who can afford coverage — which is defined as insurance costing less than 8 percent of their annual income — but choose to forgo it will have to pay either $695 or 2.5 percent of the annual income, whichever is greater.
  • Small businesses that have fewer than 10 employees, average wages beneath $25,000, and that provide insurance for their workers will get a 50 percent tax credit on their contribution. The tax credit reaches up to small businesses with up to 50 employees and average wages of $50,000, though it gets smaller as the business get bigger and richer. The credit lasts for two years, though many think Congress will be pressured to extend it, which would raise the long-term cost of the legislation.
  • Insurance companies are not allowed to discriminated based on preexisting conditions. They are allowed to discriminate based “on age (limited to 3 to 1 ratio), premium rating area, family composition, and tobacco use (limited to 1.5. to 1 ratio).”
  • Starting in 2018, the law imposes a 35 percent tax on employer-provided health plans that exceed $10,200 for individual coverage and $27,500 for family coverage. The idea is a kind of roundabout second-best to capping the tax code’s (currently unlimited) deduction for employer-provided heath insurance. The policy idea is to give employers that much more reason to avoid expensive insurance policies and thus give insurers that much more reason to hold costs down.
  • The law requires insurers to spend between 80 and 85 percent of every premium dollar on medical care (as opposed to administration, advertising, etc). If insurers exceed this threshold, they have to rebate the excess to their customers. This policy is already in effect, and insurers are expected to rebate $1.1 billion this year.
  • The law is expected to spend a bit over $1 trillion in the next 10 years. The law’s spending cuts — many of which fall on Medicare — and tax increases are expected to either save or raise a bit more than that, which is why the Congressional Budget Office estimates that it will slightly reduce the deficit. (There’s been some confusion on this point lately, but no, the CBO has not changed its mind about this.) As time goes on, the savings are projected to grow more quickly than the spending, and CBO expects that the law will cut the deficit by around a trillion dollars in its second decade. Here’s its graph, which covers the period between 2012 and 2021:
  • In recent years, health-care costs have slowed dramatically. Much of this is likely due to the recession. Some of it may just be chance. But there’s also evidence that the law has accelerated changes in the way the medical system delivers care, as providers prepare for the law’s efforts to move from fee-for-service to quality-based payments.
  • The law’s long-term success at controlling costs will likely hinge on its efforts to change the way health care is delivered, most of which have gotten very little attention. They include everything from encouraging Accountable Care Organizations to spreading medical homes to penalizing hospitals with high rates of preventable infections to creating an independent board able to quickly implement new reforms through the Medicare system. A partial list of these efforts can be found here.

Without a doubt the Affordable Care Act is not perfect, it will need work as it is implemented.  When this bill is broken down and explained many Americans like what’s in the bill.

AGAIN LET ME CLEARLY STATE, WHEN THE BILL IS BROKEN DOWN PIECE BY PIECE AMERICANS LIKE WHAT’S IN THE BILL!!!

Instead of Republicans worrying about repealing Obamacare how about Republicans and Democrats work together to make the law better.

Chuck Norris believes Pres Obama wants a Pro-Gay agenda in Boy Scouts

Come on Walker, Texas Ranger GTFOH!!!!!

This guy really believes that President Barack Obama is working on pushing a pro-gay agenda onto the Boy Scouts, HA!!

Where is Bruce Lee to kick Chuck’s ass?

The shame of the situation is that Chuck can write an opinion column about this nonsense and people will believe him.  The same idiots that believe Pres Obama and his administration started Fast & Furious to build an anti-gun campaign.  SMH, you don’t have to like Obama but do you really have to make stuff up?

I recall how Republicans would say actors should shut up about politics because they don’t know what they are talking about; we need some of those Repubs to step up now and tell Chuck Norris aka Walker, Texas Ranger to…..

STFU!!!

Takeover Thursdays – Did President Obama back down again??

NO, President Obama did the smart thing.

Those pundits (mainly Liberal) claiming the president once again “Caved in” to the GOP are completely missing the bigger picture.  Since the debt ceiling debates all we heard from Liberal pundits on how the dragged out debate hurt the country and how the focus was taken away from what is important, JOBS!

And now we have another dust-up where Pres Obama wants to give a joint session speech to Congress laying out his jobs plan; the problem is the president needs for both the House and Senate to agree on the date when Obama wants to agree on the speech.  Well, Speaker of the House John Boehner decided that September 7th was not a good day for the speech.  Some say it’s Boehner trying to embarrass the president and that could very well be the case, but I say who cares.

So what??

What’s more important right now? Day in and day out we hear that this country is in a crisis and both Democrats and Republicans have called out Obama for not addressing the problem.  So when the president decides to accept the new date suggested by Boehner, why are the pundits complaining?

The president is doing exactly what they wanted; the jobs plan is much bigger than dragging out an unnecessary fight about when to give a speech.  I will admit, I first reacted to the Boehner suggestion in a negative manner but then I realized what’s more important… The American people, those Americans that are out of work and struggling to get by.  Like the debt ceiling debate no one wants to hear about who is the bigger fish in the pond (Obama or Boehner).

Lets not forget the point of even having a joint-session of Congress; it’s about the economy and its about jobs.  If the pundits want to critique something save it for after the president’s speech; lets complain about the lack of a plan or maybe even the lack of support for the plan.

I think everyone from pundits, congress and the president need to remember one thing…  In the words of Mr Jones (Craig’s daddy in the movie Friday)

MSNBC’s Dylan Ratigan EPIC rant…..

As Americans continue to grow increasing upset with our current political process it is refreshing to see someone with a voice speak the uncensored truth.  Day in and day out we hear from the President, Democrats/Republicans/Tea Party folks in congress talk AT each other instead of TO each other.  As a political pundit Ratigan listens to the same thing EVERYDAY and instead of solutions we continue to see the systematic destruction of the United States.

We have a president that gives speeches of a vision while we have a congress scared/reluctant to do BIG things, what happened to the United States that went to the moon in the 60s and built the Hoover Dam in the 30s?  This current political environment is STUCK….

And when all phases of government are stuck, what is else is left???

As you will see in the clip below Dylan Ratigan is calling for the president to take it to the people and call what it is… Congress and our political process is BOUGHT!!!

“I am tired of Republicans and Democrats… Republicans who want to burn the place to the ground and Democrats with all due respect who wanna offer a plan that gets it through the end of their 2nd term of their presidency and screws me and my kids when it’s over…..”

Ratigan is correct on all levels and I will admit I get caught up in the idea of Dems vs Repubs, when both sides are to blame. Back in 2010 President Obama loved to use the line that Republicans drove the car (economy) into the ditch…..

WRONG Mr President, as Ratigan clearly states it was both the Democrats and Republicans who drove the economy into the ditch!!!

So what do WE do?

Well as Ratigan would explain the day after his rant, we have to take responsibility to understand/educate ourselves about what is going on with the Banks and American Tax Code and to turn around and explain it to those that don’t understand.  In this day in age with word of mouth and social media we can get the message out.

HELL, if we can start a f*(king Trending Topic on Twitter about Justin Bieber and keep it up there for months we can do the same about what is wrong with the United States and its financial system.

Of course this is all fine and dandy but as one of guest stated,

“Money and politics is the root of al political evil, it is corruption at it’s worse. And until we step up and kick that out of the park, it’s going to be the same system all the way.”

President Obama Addresses the Nation on Dangers of Default

Pres Obama addressed the nation Monday night but he really didn’t say anything new; well he did ask Americans to call their congressmen/women and let them know they support compromise and a balanced approach of reducing the deficit.

Obama once again stated his desire for a compromise between Democrats and Republicans; a compromise would include both sides giving in on long-standing beliefs.  Those beliefs being….

  1. Democrats – Cuts to entitlement programs; Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid
  2. Republicans – Raising taxes to increase revenues

The president believes you cannot truly reduce the deficit by simply reducing spending; he is of the opinion that reduction in spending will only hurt growth in the economy and set the country on the track for a double-dip recession.  Obama seem somewhat serious about a long-tern solution that will not only raise the debt ceiling through 2012 but it will also significantly reduce the deficit.

In his address to the people Obama described the stalemate and clearly pointed out that it was a select ‘Significant’ group on the Republican side that seemed to be holding up any deal that would raise the debt ceiling.  President Obama even went as far as invoking the words of former President Ronald Reagan (who raised the debt ceiling 18 times).

The next couple of days will be very interesting as Republicans seem hell-bent on the president failing and the Democrats will continue to fight any cuts to entitlements, many believe the Obama will fold and give into Republicans.  But is it really folding when so much is on the line?

As President Obama stated,

“The American people may have voted for divided government, but they didn’t vote for dysfunctional government…”

RAISE THE DEBT CEILING!!!

By the way it seems like the American were listening to the president when he said people should contact their congressional representatives; shortly after his address it was reported that the websites of congressional sites were down.

Speaker Boehner breaks off talks with Pres Obama on debt ceiling

Once again Republicans have basically walked out of discussions concerning reducing the deficit and raising the debt ceiling; this time instead of it being Eric Cantor this time it’s Speaker Boehner.  Pres Obama in latest talks offered Speaker Boehner $1 Trillion in cuts plus $650 Billion more in cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security; this latest offer was more “Generous” than what the Gang-Of-6 plan was offering.

With this latest walkout the president has asked Congressional Leaders to show up to the White House 11am tomorrow morning and that everyone should come with some kind of plan to avoid default.  Obama indicating that we have reached a point where the debt ceiling HAS to be raised now through 2012 and that talks would continue after debt ceiling is raised on reducing the deficit.

If Pres Obama manages to get a clean vote raising the debt ceiling (meaning no stipulations for the raise) he may have pulled off one of the greatest bluffs ever.  Many Republicans (Tea Party kats including Rand Paul) ran on the platform that they will not raise the debt ceiling without significant cuts to the deficit.  If the debt ceiling is raised with specific reductions agreed upon, Republicans will lose what leverage they had in this fight.  The GOP Congressional Leadership should have challenged the president and taken him up on his offer on the cuts and entitlement reforms.  1st Republicans turned down an initial grand bargain deal that would have had $4 Trillion cuts and possibly significant reforms to entitlement programs.  Instead Republicans declined the deal because it included eliminating many Corporate Tax Loopholes that would have raised revenue.

And now Republicans are rejecting an offer by the president that is more “Generous” than what the Gang-of-6 were proposing; WTF!  Most analyst agree that what the Gang-of-6 was offering was more than fair to the GOP an would have hurt the hardcore Liberal.

Instead Republicans want no parts of a balanced approach to reducing the deficit, they would prefer deficit reduction be done by hurting the middle class and poor.  Polls favor Pres Obama in this debate, #1 the American believe the debt ceiling should be raised and#2 they favor a balanced approach to reducing the deficit; meaning not only cutting spending but also raising revenue to reduce our national debt.

Republicans may have squandered a GREAT opportunity to not only reduce the deficit but also a chance to reform entitlements.  If the debt ceiling is raised with no stipulations, the momentum swings back in the favor of the president and the Democrats.  They can play hardball in defending Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

Hey Republicans, You Know You Done Fucked Up Now, You Know That, DONT YOU!!!!!

Talking Points Tuesdays – Anthony ‘Weinergate’ Weiner

As many of you know I am a big fan of Representative Anthony Weiner and his famous rants on the floor of the House of Representatives; but it seems the same ego that had him calling out House Republicans all throughout the Healthcare Debate has led to his fall from grace.  Only ego would let a married public official believe that he can send pics of his bare chest and underwear covered penis to women on Twitter.

It was also ego that convinced Weiner to lie about posting the pic of his penis and blame it on a hacked Twitter account.  Now Weiner will have to put that ego aside as he attempts to survive this controversy and hold onto to what is left of his political career.

As Politico pointed out this morning it’s not like Weiner had a standout legislation record; he was more known as a passionate mouth piece that stood out during the Healthcare Debates.  It was Weiner’s fire that helped keep the momentum going for reform.  Many will say that Weiner’s rants and brash ways was his way to build his inevitable run for Mayor of NYC; I have to admit that the idea of the fiery Weiner running NYC was very intriguing….

Unfortunately the likelihood of that happening now is more of a dream than a reality!!!

New Yorkers love a comeback story, we can understand people making mistakes…. But WTH!!!!!

If Weiner would have simply admitted that he was the one who sent the pic of his penis to 21-year-old Gennette Nicole Cordova he might still have an outside chance of still running for mayor of NYC 2013.  Again it would have been an outside shot; but with Weiner admitting to lying his chances at running for mayor in the near future are dead.

But all is not lost with Weiner, at this point he has not committed a crime (except against his marriage).  There will be an ethics investigation into behavior and the worst that will happen is that he will be given a slap on the wrist for being STUPID!

What’s important for Weiner at this point is that he has to do something that he may not be used to… Keep quiet and keep a low profile!  Weiner took the 1st steps yesterday finally admitting he is the penis pic tweeter (LOL); then he stood up in front of the press and answered just about every embarrassing question.  The point is to get all the questions out of the media’s system and then try to move on; the moving on part will not be easy especially with Republicans and even some Democrats who could look to exact some revenge on the hot-headed congressman who at times took no prisoners.  I am sure Rep. Peter King (R-NY) a known adversary of Weiner is taking a lot of joy watching Weiner squirm.

All in all Weiner will not be able to control what Republicans and Democrats will do with his future, but what he can do in keeping his head low is focusing on the little things.

If there is a pot hole that needs to be filled, Weiner should be out there with a shovel filling that pot hole!

If there is a park to be cleaned up, Weiner should be there with a broom and brand new swings set!

If there is a block party or parade that needs a permit, Weiner should be right there filling out the paper work!

In other words focus on the people who put you in office, work on possibly winning their trust back.  Maybe, JUST MAYBE… he will be able to regain the fire that made him a rising star as mouth piece for Democrats!

Here is a look back at classic Anthony Weiner

Bush, “Truly not concerned about Bin Laden…”

A couple of days ago I wrote about Condoleezza Rice nicely handling herself on Lawrence O’Donnell’s show and how it is vogue right now for Democrats to criticize the Bush Administration for not catching Osama Bin Laden.  I thought it was a bit over the top the way some Dems had looked at the capture and death of Bin Laden as purely an accomplishment for President Obama and failure for former President Bush.

BUT…..

I find it insulting that FOX News thinks they can just re-write history and act as if Bin Laden was always a major focus for them!!

GOP: STOP LYING!!!!!

On 3/13/2002 then Pres Bush minimized the influence of Bin Laden.  If you are going to applaud Pres Bush for building the foundation of intelligence gathering that ‘MAY’ have assisted the Obama Administration to find Bin Laden… THEN you also have to acknowledge that it was Pres Bush who  re-focused US interest from Afghanistan to Iraq.

In the next couple of days I will talk more about the silliness of FOX News coverage of the capture/killing of Osama Bin Laden!!
